Exhaust Manifold Studs

#1

Changing out the exhaust manifold gasket, all of the nuts came off perfectly, save one which brought with it the stud that screws into the head. The stud does not appear to be broken though getting it to thread back into the block has been an excise in futility. Any ideas?

The stud ought to go back into the head. But if the damn thing won’t you can either buy new studs from Pelican Parts, or you can put in a bolt of the same size.

If the stud wont go back in it means more than likely you pulled the threads out with it. You might get lucky and a thread chaser might clean up whats left and get you going , but I fear that you will have to install a helicoil, or a timesert, to fix it. Look at the threads on the stud and if there is an aluminum covering them then thats what happened.

PS a bolt there is not a goood idea, there are studs there for a reason, the studs withstand heat better and are less likely to break off in the head .also a stud/nut combo has more clamping force.

thanks. i’ll try a new stud first.

New studs from your local BMW Dealer are cheap as, even here in Australia. It’s an M8 stud, so none of you Imperial lovin types will carry them in Autoshops… :stuck_out_tongue:
