Engine Swap Help Needed

#1

I am dropping in a 1991 "i" motor into an 87’ "e" car. My problem is in the wiring harness. There are two connectors on the engine harness that do not match up to the wiring in the car. Can someone please help me understand what I need to do here? If I need to splice some wires, which ones? Thank you.

PS- Please dumb down the electrical speak.

What connectors are you referring to? The later cars had one sensor (reference sensor) that took the place of the 2 …Crank position and I cant remember what the other one is for but it is in the same area.

The car has two connections that came off of the 87’ wiring harness. The 91’ has a black and white connector that is in the loom for the ECU connection. The car’s connections do not match up with the white/black connection on the harness. Someone here has to have done this before.

I think you’re going to have to swap the ECUs & harnesses – the 1987 ‘e’ cars have Motronic 1.1 ECUs, the 87-91 ‘i’ cars have motronic 1.3 ECUs. I don’t think the connectors are the same.

I just helped Alex perform a motor swap, and there were a couple connectors that went unused - or had to be modified to make the tach work.

I think the car should fire up and run without the extra connectors (just the big ECU connector plugged in). And I think that Alex had to splice wires on the smaller connectors and run them to the tach.

Bottome line: I think you can leave the extra connectors dangling.

Good luck, and keep us posted. Alex doesn’t scan the boards much, but I can relay your q’s to him if you find specific problems.

I already have the "i" ECU. I’ll give it a shot without the splicing, but eventually (very soon) I’ll need to get the tach working. I can shift by ear, but just to be safe…
