Electric Fan Switch Wiring help

#1

I would like to remove my engine driven fan and use the aux. electric fan in it’s place wired to a switch. Any tips or instructions on how to wire up the fan? Thanks

Use a relay because the fan pulls too much current to route thru most switches that you’d want to put on your dash. I re-wired mine a couple weeks ago using some generic relay that I pulled off of an E30 parts car.

PM me your email address if you want a quick diagram.

The easiest way to add a fan switch is to use the lines coming out of the radiator thermo-switch. This way, you don’t have to add a relay. You will be using the existing fan relays already there.

On the side of the radiator, there is a three pin thermo-switch. One is ground, one is low temp trigger, and the last is high temp trigger. (it’s been a while. There may be only two pin contact and the body might be the ground.)

Splice a wire to the high temp trigger side. Run that wire to a switch and the other side of the switch to the ground.

I used a relay, a 20a inline fuse, and a lighted single throw toggle switch from Autozone. Pick up power for the fan at the main power lug on the passenger side of the firewall. Ground the power at the grounding lug on the passenger strut tower. You can pick up power for the switch from the same places or pull power from the main wiring junction under the driver side of the dash. I actually did that, using some abandoned circuits from radio or something. I don’t remember.
The fan rarely needs to run. Only in really hot days if you’re stuck under a red flag or something like that.
The thermo switch like Chi described is the “fool-proof” way to do it so you don’t hav e to remember to turn in on/off. I could never get mine to work though, could have been a dead switch. I like the cool red light on the toggle switch. Makes it seem more like a race car.

LIke John, used a relay and fuse. I used the A/C switch - it lights up blue!
Splice into the yellow wire (push it out of the dash - you will see it)

All of this is explained in several previous message strings on this forum - do a search for diagrams, etc.
