Dyno Testing at PFM Engineering 7/16

#1

We’ve been wanting to do some testing and so I made some phone calls to line up a day to do such.

When; Saturday 7/16, start at 9am
Where: PFM Engineering Cumming, GA www.pfmengineering.com
How Much: $600 for the 8 hour day. Chip-in $ as you see fit.

I’ll be there with 4 cars to test, Palacios with 2, Taylor with 1, perhaps the DeVinney-mobile. (Steve can’t make it but his car might appear.)

Others?

Count me in!

#3

Fred, great. Need a place to stay overnight Friday/ Saturday?

Remember that Dynapak numbers are not really directly comparable to Dynojet numbers which I still consider to be the industry standard. Wish I could come, it sounds like a great time.

RP
Thanks, but I’m only a couple hours away - I’ll just get up early and stay late. But I appreciate the offer!

#6

Yep, I’ll be there to at least see what the new motor shows, relative to the Taxi and perhaps Steve’s 410.

Going to get my car in the early wave, and then I’m off to Robert’s playhouse to pull the transmission and fix the massive oil leak that I hope is coming from the transmission and not the engine side of the bellhousing.

#7

Unfortunately, the 410 and I won’t be able to make it. She is undergoing a rocker-ectomy as a precaution after my multiple overrevs at Charlotte. That bent shift rod just got quite expensive…

I’ve got my fingers crossed for the Patton-Taylor rebuild!! Take plenty of OilDri because Jimmy’s shop is shockingly clean!

#8

Robert, what’s the updated list of attendees? I’m also bringing my E36 M3 so 3 cars from my side.

We’ll cut out the street cars as needed to get the good cars on the dyno.
I’ll ask DeVinney if we can pull-up his results from earlier testing.
I don’t see a whole lot of upside there.

Hopefully we will all be subjected to dyno testing at MidOhio in September.

#11

Too bad I’ll be in Boston… I’m definitely anxious to see how the new engine stacks up. Hopefully I’ll be able to make it to the next one.

Steve, there is a tremendous upside to the data that you have from previous testing.

Without going into a long dissertation, the comparisons between good 'ole boy rebuilds that even the unskilled hobbiest can do, versus the junkyard engine guy, versus the rebuild from 2006, versus the Metric Mechanic guys and their knowledge of what is right and what is wrong, versus the Sam Moore rebuild, versus the California guys that I understand are out of control…it sets the tone for the future of this series.

That’s just my opinion, but it does agree with the “Carter Hunt theory of how the series will progress” dated 2004.I’ll have to see if I can find it.

Perhaps it means that all golfers will have to ante-up for titianum golf clubs and a new bag to carry 'em in. We already know that you need to have new balls (tires) for each race weekend.Hey how bout a tire rule, all race tires must have at least 8 heat cycles on them before you can race. Where is a good rules guy when you need him?
Evan is a great example of what you can do with a limited budget of money and a bucketload of talent. He has an original motor with a freshened head. He does not run new tires each weekend. He gets the job done.

I am happy to race under whatever rules everyone agrees on. Define “heat cycle” and I’ll run on 8 cycle tires. I thought I was showing some restraint by only using one set of stickers a weekend.:woohoo:

Just don’t outlaw coaching, data acquisition, and restarts. Those - along with an admittedly good motor - got me that win in Charlotte.

Steve, thanks for the clarification. The baseline to aspire to will give us knuckle-buster/shadetree types something to shoot for. My apologies for the misunderstanding, that is often the problem with the typed words on a piece of paper/screen. The data is okay to use from your earlier PFM test?

Robert -

I haven’t had very good luck sharing dyno data. Remember this? “Chuck says it’s not an M20.”

I am not trying to be unsportsmanlike, but I’m going to play my cards close to my vest on this one. I’ve heard enough grumblings about my motor already this year. I’m in a “have you stopped beating your wife” kind of position here.

I have had to run NASA-SE Traqmates at least a couple times. Is that data going to be published to the group or is it just available to the series directors and other NASA officials?

you beat all of us on a regular basis, so it’s a reasonable question

#17

Steve, I’ll ask Jim about the trackmate data. The consenus thus far is that the data is junk.

RP

#18

So who won the dyno shoot out?

#19

“We’re playing our cards close to the vest.”
