Double Yellow Finish

#21

Jeff, Certainly some of those “21 drivers” could see the pace car from where they were. Keep in mind the pace car was not visable to those mid pack and behind. My decision to pass was made as soon as my rear bumper cleared the 9th turn flag station and I did not observe yellow at the next flag station.

Someone please post a video.

Laser surgery is a good thing. 20/10 on my last checkup.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and voice an unpopular point of view…

If you guys didn’t see the double yellow at start finish, then you weren’t paying close enough attention. The flags were there. True… they were tough to see… but they were there and most drivers saw them.

Putting all the blame on the corner workers or the colors of the flag stations is a cop out.

Scott, my issue is not with the “corner” workers, they did a great job. The flagger at the S/F needs a little counciling…thats all.

If anyone has a video please post it, b/c I think the flags were in the same place for all of the laps…

  • plus it is hard to hold two(2) flags and wave a third all the while being dangled over a racetrack in a tiny bucket*. B)

*and not drop them onto the track below

Same here. But apparently not good enough to see the two yellow flag that everyone agrees were there (all be it, hard to see)!

There were two guys holding flags on the last lap. The starter was waving the checker and another guy was holding the double yellows against the blue side of the tower.

The flags moved between laps.

Its still the driver’s job to spot the flags.

JP, no one said it wasn’t a driver’s job to spot flags, but if you don’t see them and think they aren’t there how are you supposed to spot what you don’t realize is there.

Is it too much to ask to see a video of Saturday’s finish?

According to Chuck there was also a white flag with the checker. Now if that is true there were four flags waving on the last lap. My recollection is the white flag was on the next to last lap. It would be interesting to review it, thats all.

Guys, It is clear that I am wrong, I just want to see where the flags were and determine visability from the last flag station. The flagman is responsible for making the flag visable to the entire field. It is my opinion without reviewing the video that the yellow was improperly displayed.

I’ll post what I have from Sat. finish later tonight or early tomorrow.

I didn’t see them at first either and I think I mentioned that to Jim and crew. I had the benefit of being behind the pace car so I knew something wasn’t right and as I got closer I managed to pick out the double yellows.

I did downshift just in case something fishy was going on

I’ve got video but have to find time to download and post. Regardless of what the video shows, I know that I screwed up. Could the flagman at the start/finish line have did a better job displaying the flag - definitely yes! I hope that he learned something from this, but that is out of my control. What’s in my control is making sure I don’t make the same mistake again and I’m definitely going to try to do that…

20.13.1 Full Course Yellow / Pace Car Procedures.
During a Full Course Yellow, in the absence of a Pace Car anywhere on course (or after the Pace Car has pulled off the marked course), the lead car will pace (meaning steady speed) the field. Each competitor may resume passing at any time in the absence of a Pace Car being on course providing that they are completely past a manned flag station not displaying any yellow flag. The presenting of a green flag is not a necessity to resume [Ref:(20.13)] a practice or qualifying.[/quote]

I was already in the infield, but if I’m reading this situation correctly: double yellow was displayed at Turn 9, checkered flag was flying ahead. According to the rule above, even if there were no yellow at the Start/Finish, a driver couldn’t legally pass until they were past the start/finish line, at which point it would have been moot since the race would have been over. Just because you can see a flag station doesn’t mean you’re completely past it.
