Al K and I were talking today about looking into a big trailer to go to distant events. My truck can handle a gooseneck. I figure a flat tow to Austin TX, for example, I ought to be able to get the same 12mpg I get to Road Atlanta. That means $600 worth of diesel. Split 2 or 3 ways, that ain’t much. Hmm. Mid-O, VIR, Road America, Watkins Glen…
Double or triple trailer to go to distant events
How about a 3 car trailer? Just because I’m in Afghanistan doesn’t mean you can exclude me!
Hurry home, we miss you.
The problem with a big shared trailer is that we all have different tow vehicles.
The ideal trailer is a long sloping 3 car gooseneck sort of thing where the lead car is up over the truck’s bed. But that requires a 1 ton truck with a gooseneck ball in the hitch.
The #2 trailer would a 2 car sloping gooseneck. A 3/4 ton truck with a gooseneck ball can pull it. Between me, Al, Fish, Fred and Ludo, only I have a gooseneck ball in a 3/4 ton truck.
The #3 trailer would be a 2 car standard hitch. Me, Rich and Al could all pull that.
So, if we get a gooseneck we’re limited to my truck, yet there’s still no way to pull 3 cars. Al says he needs a new truck anyhow tho. Maybe what he needs is a 1 ton. Or maybe Al gets a 3/4 ton and both he and Rich get gooseneck balls installed.
Here’s a triple trailer. Gooseneck wedge design. 5600lbs and you can tell by the design that with 3 cars on it, there’d be a shitpot of weight on the truck’s bed.

I bet with 3 cars with their trunks full of gear there’d be >6000lbs of weight on the truck’s bed. No way a 3/4 ton truck can take that.
Here’s a 2 car gooseneck wedge. Note that they say it works well with a 1 ton. So we’re getting closer. http://www.kaufmantrailers.com/heavy-equipment-trailer-store/Kaufman-Trailers-Catalog/Wedge-Car-Trailers/12,000-GVWR---35-ft.-Wedge-Car-Trailer-p80.html
I looked up the towing capacity of an F-250 and according to it the 2 car Gooseneck is do-able.
I would think, unless all three drivers, spectators, crew chiefs, or family will all ride to the track in the same tow vehicle. That means someone else will also be driving or flying to the said location. So why not split up all the weight? My buddies always took two rigs with two cars each. In addtion to having more than one drivable vehicle on location, it also provides some security of recovery incase of a break down along the way if you convoy. I’m just not sure splitting fuel costs 3 ways rather than 2 is worth the addtional costs of pulling a 3 car trailer. I would be very interested in hearing what you guys come up with after crunching the numbers. I just picked up my new F350, and will need to choose what size and type of trailer for myself.
