Do I Need a New Transmission/Gearbox ?

#1

I went to a 2 day drivers school with SCCA this weekend. About half way thru the 2nd day I could no longer down shift to 2nd gear. I am guessing the synchros are gone.

Anything else it could be? Suggestions for a fix? Reman trans? junkyard trans? Anyone have one?

Hints and tips for swapping the trans while the engine is still in the car?

Thanks in advance

andrew from drivegear sells rebuilt ones. definitely doable with engine in the car, just a pain to get the top bolts off to separate the trans from the engine.

Don’t use 2nd ;), I can’t think of many corners where you would need 2nd?

Simon, the thought had crossed my mind and skipping 2nd made me find a better line and I was carrying more speed in to the following turn, but I would like to use my new line and 2nd gear to get up the hill faster.

I am getting a rebuilt Trans from Andrew. Now I just need to find a engine hoist and a trans jack I can borrow.

Lots of extentions and one wobbly joint are the key to getting the upper bolts. I also liked the suggestion to weld the nuts on the starter before you put it back on so you don’t have to try and hold the nut form one side while tightening from the other. You don’t need an engine hoist or a transmission jack. I did mine with 2 floor jacks. One to support the front and one to support the back.
