Discussion on qualifying changes

In case some of you don’t keep up with the nasa-se forum:

Thunder needs a yellow flag lap to scrub their slicks in (editorial comment). :stuck_out_tongue: Maybe they should just do a drag race down the front straight for position? Best 2 out of 3 both ways.

I’m not in your region but after running with mid-atlantic and getting screwed in both qualifying sessions (not that it would have made any difference  ) I can feel the pain. I think the real problem, although gridding by time would be good but more work, is that NASA is reaching critical mass and its time to start seperating groups. There are just too many groups and not enough track time. At VIR for qualfying you might get 3 hot laps, the race length was also pitiful and if you have any yellows you’re basically screwed. I would probably get more than double the track time at a BMWCCA weekend. At least in our region you get 35 mins for a race and at putnam this past weekend I was racing for close to 30mins. I think the qualifying window should be at least 20 mins especially at the longer tracks. The race window should also be longer like 45 mins or at the bare minimum 35mins. Entry fees might have to go up but I’m all for it. That is my biggest complaint with NASA. I know they are for profit but I think the track time is pitiful. Maybe finicially it isn’t possible, but pretty soon they will have to do something as these events are starting to sell out pretty quickly.

All good points. I did a BMWCCR and had an hour to qualify, what luxury.

However assuming all things remain equal and taking the 40-60 car fields into account and a 10 or 15 min session, eliminating a green flag lap and going to double yellows for a lap isn’t helping (imho).

The practice idea I think has the same problem, you’ve basically made practice into qualifying and I’m going to try and be at the head of that group too.

Maybe you can do a double qualifying (at least on Saturday) similar to an F1 qualifying.

Use the practice time to sort out the top 5 (or whatever the number) in each group or total of top 25 cars overall and then only those cars run during the qualifying session.

Just a thought.

At some point, NASA will have to separate out either TTs or HPDEs if the racing becomes more popular.

I read this thread and thought…Too many cars? That is a good problem to have. Particularly with pump gas at $4.00/gallon.

Simon, I agree that VIR has become a joke. After running last weekend at RRR with the SE, I don’t want to return to 25 minute races, or whatever they were at VIR. 50 minutes at RRR was great. I believe I’ve had only 15 minutes to qualify at VIR, too, which isn’t even enough time to get one good lap in.
