Diff noises? Options?

#1

Now that the sound deadening material is out and the back seat and carpet are gone, the noises from the rear end are deafening at highway speeds. I’m pretty sure it’s not wheel bearings, but noise from the diff. It has fresh redline 75w90 but still whines like crazy. Is there a fix for that? Has anyone else experienced this? Is a replacement or rebuild the only solution? Or should I just run it 'til it dies? If replacement is warranted, anyone got a spare cheap one?

Thanks,

Kevin

Mine did the same thing (whined like crazy). Once you install the spec exhaust the diff noise will go away

welllll, I currently have no muffler and gutted cat so any drowning out of noises is maxed out  Spec exhaust is on the way. So are you still running with the noisy diff? Will it survive track days?

I changed the fluid, added a finned cover (was getting really hot and boiling fluid out of the vent at certain tracks, certain turns, etc), forgot about it. Another year of DE’s, then 1.5 years of racing later, still works fine.

On my parts car turn daily driver, My Diff wines only at highway speeds and I was told by a few e30 guys that the output bearing on the diff was going bad. it has been 4 months and I still drive it everyday. I only hear it occasionaly and it is not getting any worse(that I can tell).

PS: my parts car turned daily driver is gutted except for the driver seat and has stock exhaust. gutted cars get better gas mileage too

My diff whines like crazy too… I think mine is a combination of gear noise, and output shaft bearing on the right hand side. I run redline in it & have replaced the rear axkles, and wheel bearings to rule those out, but still whining away. It’s been like that since I bought the car in May of last year, and I’ve been to a track weekend a month since then (save for december to february), and it hasn’t gotten any worse.

I’ll save it for a winter time rebuild project.

+1 for gutted track car turned daily driver! (I still get stares when I pull up to a red light brakes squealing away tho!)
(Why is it that my real daily driver gets 10mpg, and my track car gets 28mpg?)
hmmmmmm

This, to me, is one of the joys of watching a street car bloom into a race car. You get to hear all that wonderful machinery.

It can be disconcerting at first, but it slowly becomes a symphony and you wonder how you lived without it.
