Data Acquisition or Timing equipment

#1

Tom and I are getting really close now with our car and we are planning on Racing Sunday (Tom anyway) in Feb. at CMP!

Now, I have a question, and I’ll try to be 100% accurate in asking it, but what are the rest of you guys using for lap timing and/or data acq? It would be nice to use the same equipment.

We will spend the bulk of our time in the SE but are looking at VIR also for those events. So let us know where you are and what you use if you would please.

I’m using a Traq-Mate.

Jeff,

I don’t think many of the SE30 cars are using data aquisition maybe because this is a low budget series or it just hasn’t caught on yet. I know two (Dan and Carlton) that are using Traqmate. I have Racepak G2x and have only collected data from 1 weekend at VIR. For the money I think the G2x is a better deal. They can be found on ebay for significantly less than the Traqmate and the display is much nicer IMO.

Contact the seller of this on ebay and he can get more of them.

I would encourage you to get the G2x so I will have some useful data to compare against. But seriously, either way you go you will get lots of good, useful data to improve your laptimes with.

Jim and Tom, hang tight as I might have a video/data system available for rent at the SE tracks. Regards, Robert Patton

I have a traqmate and love it. Wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I’ve got AIM MXL in mine. I bought it when they were offering it at the intro price of $1200. I like it, but there are a bunch of new products with better price point/value that have cropped up since.

I would love to have one but they aren’t cheap. And with an older seat, harness, window net, shoes, etc. I might be buying a lot of "stuff" for '07.

I’m looking at the AMB in-car lap timer that’s supposed to give lap times, number of laps, time to car in front, time to car behind, etc.

Does anyone now anything about them?

the track has to be running the AMB T&S system with a particular rev of software. They are useless for test days if they’re not running the timing.

OK, I guess that was another bad question since no one seems to be in agreement! LOL!!!

I guess we may try the simple solution and start with a Hot Lap or something and go thru the same learning curve as everyone else.

The Traqmate looks like the second easiest and second cheapest relative to what it does. I sure like the info of some of the more expensive units but being as this is first season for our car, we have alot of other fairly important items to get (tires, wheels, etc.).

I talked to the head of T&S for the SE rgeion because i wanted to get the same thing. The software NASA SE uses is not compatible with the setup. I don’t know if your region has the correct software or not.

Jeff, Carter and anyone else considering a lap timer that uses an infrared beacon, you should look at the Aim MyChron Light TG. The display is much nicer and it has several useful functions that make it superior to the Hot Lap timer.

I found a source for this timer for $215. However it is the motorcycle version with a short lead on the receiver pickup. I’ve used this model with no problems mounting the in-car receiver where it can "see" the beacon signal. Here is a link to the source.
