Dang it, new running problem/...

#1

getting ready for this weekend, car when coming off idle, stumbles, sometimes backfires into afm, check engine light comes on…changed ECU, no difference, unplugged O2 sensor light still comes on. Seems to go away when warmed up…

Hmmm…any ideas? Just installed engine, had to wire, but it had intake with injectors, TPS clicks when moved off idle.

Backfires on an M20 are almost always the result of incorrect valve timing or intake leaks. But I suppose that a problem with the CPS or harmonic balancer could be a cause.

That’s pretty close to the symptoms I got when a pulley was abrading the CPS wire. I checked that the wire wasn’t touching the crank 1000 times, and that’s what fooled me. It only touched the crank when the car started moving with a sense of purpose.

Even when I looked at the wire really close, I couldn’t see abrasion. Looking down, the problem was invisible. In order to see the fraying on the wire I had to separate it’s connector and pull the wire away from the pulley so I could see it’s underside.

Like Ranger, I was thinking crank position sensor as well.
