Cylinder Head Pricing

What is a good fair rate these days for a new and/or reman or used M20B25 cylinder head?

$2k will get you a new head. New casting, new cam and rockers.

For a head that has been refreshed really well, that is to say the cam and rockers are used but cherry, and the head’s cam journals are tight and unscored, I’d expect to pay $1k. Beware of folks selling refreshed heads that talk as if they are this good, but sell the head for a couple hundred less. IMO not that many shops check the head’s cam lobes for wear and if they aren’t tight it will affect oil pressure.

A average refreshed head is about $800. That gets you a head with a good valve job and rockers and cam that will pass a casual visual inspection. Cam wear on the lifting surface of the lobe isn’t necessarily easy to see.

$300 will get you an unrefreshed head that someone says is serviceable.

There’s guys here with more experience in this than I,so don’t take my answers as gospel. I’d also ask this same question at bf.c and e30tech.

I paid $800 for a head refresh last summer - new rockers, rocker arm shafts, eccentrics, used cam, and cleaning/resurfacing.

That was a really good deal. I think that new rockers, eccentrics and shafts alone would be ~$350.
