Is a crank-scraper illegal in SpecE30?
crank scrapers?
To quote Carter’s sig:

That is so arrogant but whatever. I checked the rules, couldn’t find it, but the rules are long and we have a forum to discuss the rules, so I asked. Perhaps I’m just having a Tuesday but geez people what’s the harm in asking for a simple clarification??? It’s not like I’m trying to sell anyone a crank scraper for pete’s sake.

From what I gather, they’re a cheap "baffle" (for lack of a better word) that helps keep oil in the pan, off the crank (and therefore, near the sump) to help avoid oil starvation.
By keeping oil from splashing onto the crank, the baffle should reduce drag, and give a small HP gain.
I think that there is a performance advantage to them, which is another reason that they’re not allowed in the rules.
Hope that helps!

Wow.
Sorry, I wasn’t trying to be a dick.
Putting that aside, I still don’t believe they are legal.
there is a reference to scrapers in the oil pan section of the rules - I take that to refer to crank scrapers.
9.3.1.6.5. Oil pans, pan baffles, scrapers, windage trays, and oil pickups are unrestricted.
you can use the search function in a pdf document to find stuff.
cheers,
bruce

Unless I’m misreading this, that these items are "unrestricted" in the rules would mean that they would in fact be legal, no? BTW - this seems like something the miata guys would have a woody for: "that thing can get me 0.2 HP!".
Confused (as usual!),
Steve
It is specifically allowed in the Rules so yes, it’s legal.
I think their was some confusion because it’s never been brought-up and no one has seen a need for it.
Like with a few other items, we wanted to include these in-case the cars had a problem with oil starvation, which they haven’t.
