Comp School/Licensing

#1

While continuing this year and next in HPDE, and gradually getting the car to Spec setup, I am trying to set a realistic timetable/schedule for myself if I should take the plunge and do this whole W2W thing.

One question I have is about getting licensed in OH/In region. What are my options for this. Will I need to go to a Comp School? Any in the general area (day’s drive from Ohio) other than the Mid-Ohio school?

Any input is appreciated.

DaveCN,

I’m not familiar with the Ohio area NASA chapter, but you should be able to talk to someone in your region about where and when they’ll hold a supercomp school…Here’s the Ohio contact info

Dave Royce
5250 Grand Avenue
Suite 14-387 Gurnee, IL 60031
847-574-8032 Office & Fax
ohioinfo@drivenasa.com

If that suggestion doesn’t work for you then you might consider contacting Dave Ho, that NASA National Licencing director. nasadaveho@yahoo.com

Hope this helps

I’ll check with Dave Royce. Thanks.

If you are ready, the Mid Atlantic does comp eval at every event with PRE-Approval. It is not supercomp school, just an evaluation of the driver skill/awareness, knowledge, etc…

Now that is interesting to know. I’ll talk to Royce about that and whether OH/IN might do the same. THough I wont be at the OH/IN NASA event this weekend, I am going to be at the next one at Putnam Park. I’ll track him down there and find out.

Gracias!

My advice is to take your time and avail yourself of as much instructed wet skidpad time as possible.

The step up from HPDEs to racing is big – a lot bigger than I expected. I only managed to cross the finish line in my first race because of all the time I spent on the skidpad and the reflexed I had developed (although I’m still getting used to the E30’s spin habits – I’ve only had it on the skidpad twice). That first race was technically the third NASA race I had driven-in, the 4th standing start, and the 9th or 10th time I’d been in an open-passing full-on ‘race environment’ and I was still so nervous that I nearly balled it up. (During the second race, I was much more relaxed.)

Trust me, I know how anxious it can be chomping at the bit to get your license, but make sure you’re not rushing yourself – SpecE30, especially in Ohio/Indiana and Mid-Atlantic, isn’t going anywhere but up.

If you’re curious, this is a list of my track experience, including the July races at VIR: http://www.dvsmith.net/bmw/track_days.html

Thanks for the input, Dan. I am not in a huge rush, and I am not going to make the move unless/until I am ready. At this point, it all depends on how I progress - particularly next year. I am planning on being at the HPDE4 and TT level aat some point next year. I wouldn’t plan on trying to get a license until the end of '07 or the beginning of '08. And that may be on the early side.
