Madre de Dios…What a fun weekend!
Stephen, Dave (future Spec E30’er), Darani (my wonderful, understanding girlfriend), and I rolled outta DC at 6:30am on Friday and the madness began. The trip started as a high-class adventure. We sipped on gatorade, and ate whole cashews from Darani’s care packages. Yes, she packed little care packages for everyone to snack on. So far, bringing the girlfriend to the track was a good idea.
We met Carter Hunt near Raleigh, and he gave me instructions on administrating the weekend. Carter had some family issues and couldn’t make it. We missed ya Carter!!
Next stop: SOUTH OF THE BORDER. Oh yeah. Plastic trinkets, fireworks, sombreros, and burritos galore.
Armed with sombreros, we marched on to Kershaw, South Carolina. We rolled in nice and early, and had plenty of time to set up, hang with Jonny Allen, and the rest of the Spec E30 crew. Darani enjoyed meeting all the nut-jobs that I race with, so still a good idea that she came along.
We checked in to the less-than-sanitary Executive Inn and eeked out a good nights rest. Hmm, starting to think that Darani might not enjoy the amenities. At least the rumors of loud obnoxious parties at the Inn didn’t hold true. I guess the ladies of the night staying above us were not in a partying mood. The rest of our Salazar buddies rolled in late and crashed in Stephen’s trailer. I think they shared an air-matress. Cozy.
Ok, on to the racing: Saturday was wet. The gods just couldn’t decide on wet or dry, and it was tough to tell whether to go to rains. I stuck with dries all day and it paid off. I followed Jonny in qualifying, made a last-minute pass and busted on one fast lap to take the pole. We were about 6 seconds off of the lap record, in the wet. Not bad. Behind me was Mike D, Jens Scott, Chris C, Skip, Jonny, and Stephen.
The Sat Race was a blast. I had a bad start, but got a nice little push from Jens to get me going. Both Mike D and Chris got by me in the first lap, and I had to work my way back up. Coming into the high-speed kink (the scene of a lot of weekend drama) Mike spun it, and Chris and I moved up. I was primed to work with Chris to check out, but he bobbled in the slow section a couple laps later, and I passed him. Later at the kink, he came flying in while trying to out-brake me and he kept going into the weeds. I managed to get by a couple of lapped 944. Dave Derecola was AWESOME at realizing that I was coming up on him, and he gave me plenty of racing room to get by. I know another 944 was accused of messing up Al, Travis, and Keith’s race at the last lap, but I believe that was just one isolated incident in an otherwise cooperative weekend. I took the checker, and the champagne celebrations that came with.
Sunday was fun. It was dry, and I was re-learning the track. The top 6 qualifiers were seperated by .5 seconds! I was 4th in that mess, and expecting some good racing. Stephen was not far back at 8th. Our start was uneventful and I think the top 6 cars came out in the same position. Turn 3 got SLICK from a 944 that blew a motor (or was it the mess from the previous race?) - we came through like a freaking drift competition - I have soem GREAT video of everyone getting sideways. I used this to my advantage and snuck by Jens, but with oil still on our tires, it got hairy, and I conceded some spots. I then spun while doing 110 through the kink and took out the brake markers…I hope I don’t get a bill for that. I finished 10th, even though I turned the second fastest lap of the race. Oh well.
Congrats to Skip for a great race, and big-ups to Brandon who was smoking fast on Sunday. The racing really was top notch this weekend.
Poor Darani was non-too thrilled by my spin, and the 9.5 hour drive home did nothing to cheer her up. I still can’t believe she made the trip. What was she thinking?
We had a blast hanging with crazy the Beertech and Maltliquortech fools, and the rest of the crew.
Can’t wait for HYPERFEST!

Yo
The 944 that messed us up sat was the lead turbo car, Harrington, myself and JP were having a 3 car battle the last lap, he dive bombed us the last turn of the last lap, took the apex and ruined the chance of a 3 car photo finish…he said we didnt give him racing room! Hell, why couldnt he pass us on the stright with all that power? Otherwise everything was great in the sessions with the 944’s, I think lining up together with our respective groups for practise/qual worked great. I got up to 4th at the start of sat race then promptly spun on the wet painted curb. I did have a great race with David, it seemed we picked up right where we left off from Rockingham. I qualified 9th on Sun and ended up 8th with a fast lap of 2.00.0 a little over a sec off the pace. That oil made it tough, I dont think it was there the first lap…I would rather have rain…it was a fun weekend with some tough competition, see yall at RR.

Mike,
In the "edited down" version there seems to be some missing footage of your cross country drive between the spin and off at 11 and the reentry at turn 14…huumm??? Is this like the 18 minute gap in the Nixon tapes? Oh wait, your way to young to remember that…great video… I’ll try and get mine posted this week.

Vic,
Heres some ideas for the mods outside of turn 5 that we talked about. I added the machine gun nest cover any end run attempts.

looks like the fast way is between the tube and the nest…
Jens,
Nice skematic. May I suggest a couple of land mines in the middle somewhere?

Congrats to Vic and Skip on their race wins! They were haulin’ butt all weekend. Jens was also flying. Had a blast hangin’ with all you guys. Even though it’s missing some parts…Mike’s sweet vid pretty much sums up my driving for the weekend, I was all over the place. Mikey your were flying’, nice driving brother! My car was a demon! Other then pole position on Sunday and flat tracking sideways around JP through the carousel with my finger pointing in the air, it was one to forget. I’m just glad I didn’t total the thing into the wall in three. Not sure I’ve ever been that out of control before. Scary. I think oil from a 944 is as slick as it gets  Anyway, great weekend guys, can’t wait til hyperfest! Jens and company are sure to show up strong. Gonna have to bring my A game.

Thanks man. I owe you one, your quick lesson on a certain driving style was a huge help in the race. I have to say that practice on sunday was the most fun I’ve ever had in practice :woohoo:

I tried it a couple of times in my car during HPDE sessions but it was too loose and I’d slide the rear end. Once I put camber in the rear I expect I can do it pretty easy.
Jens your posts are fricken hilarious. I have seen the turn 5 cut thru used, can you get that work done before our race??
