You may have seen JP’s video and said to yourself…

“That sure was cool. But I wonder what was going on at the back of the pack?”

Well, at BeerTech… we’ve got ya covered.

Missing Saturdays race (and practice) didn’t do a lot to help with getting into the racer mindset. I missed a few opportunities and botched a turn (twice). Trying to let the RX8 pass me for more than half a lap got me a bit off my game too. But enough with the excuses. Jon and I had a good race. What you can’t see in the video is that he and I were side by side from 11 to 14.

Too good not to be posted here…

6th Place Motorsports has had better weekends… Saturday started off ugly with a qualifying position of 15th (out of 18) and witnessing Jim Robinson qualify 7th. That gave me nausea. Turn 1 at the green flag ended up being even uglier…

Video of Turn 1 from my car

The aftermath of my car

I pulled into the pits and saw that nothing was leaking. Mechanically, the car seemed fine. I had to pull the front fender out a bit with my hands (got some help from someone as well), but then finished the race, shocked at how resilient these cars are. I had hit Cullen pretty hard… It was fun racing at the back too. M3Bill and I had a photo finish at the end, only to remember that I was a lap down due to the pit stop. Fuc/<in Jim ended up taking the 6th place trophy and inaugural t-shirt. WTF. I wanted that shirt…

Things turned around Sunday though. Qualified 8th. I left a Hershey’s Kiss on the seat just after Turn 1 on the start though. Watch the video and you should be able to understand why…

Video of Turn 1 again from my car

Travis rode on the short bus to school didn’t he… He’s not a fast learner, or maybe he was oblivious to yesterday’s events After that, Laura, Tom Hall and I had a pretty great battle. Dumb racing on my part cus Tom caught us. I figured I would let him go, and the pressure would make him slip. Didn’t happen. He took a page out of the Patton Sr book - the one about not making any mistakes. We fought for a while, Laura ended up spinning (didn’t take pop’s advice), M3Bill came into the picture… briefly (that’s on tape too). Still working on uploading the full length feature film. When you get bored of watching Skeen drive by himself in his How To video (if he posts them), you’ll want to check out the fight for 7th. That’s real entertainment. Tom Hall… hat’s off my man. M3Bill, maybe next time. Laura, it’s always a great fight. Too bad Jim’s Syphilis started acting up again that he couldn’t come duke it out with us. To be continued by video explanation… [/quote]

Great stuff, I love watching these race videos, especially CMP (because it’s the only track I’ve driven!). Skeen showed me first-hand how to hotlap CMP in an M10 E30 during an open-lap day and gave me a whole new perspective on driving a low-power E30 on the ragged edge.

Can’t wait for the next race to come around!

PS–Mike, on your website, you need to change the year in your video–it’s 2008!

Yea, Craig, it was way too fun racing with you and Laura, nice battle. I thought for sure you were going to get past me because I was making a few mistakes, just none of them took me off track. I’ll get my video posted so that everyone can see the Saturday mess from my point of view, barely getting past David C. Wow, talk about a chunk of chocolate left in the drivers seat!!
Pretty wild seeing Bill Z. behind me going into the kink and then seeing him spin - you can see it happen in my rear view mirror on my soon-to-be-released video.
Looking forward to the next event.

For those of you who might be getting a whiplash or feeling dizzy from watching Skeen’s video, here is my leisurely stroll video from the DE point of view in my Mr. Junky.

Not very entertaining. How about next time you point the camera out the back so we can see some racing.

Ok, the fight from the middle of the pack (my 8th place earnout and Tom’s 7th):

The MTV generation might want to skip ahead to about the 20 min marker. That’s when it starts getting good.

Dual PIP with Traqmate and Trackvision dashboard overlay. Which would be more cool if the driver PIP wasn’t upside down. The rear PIP would be more cool if, ahhhh, there was anyone behind me.

The PVR is ChaseCam, but the cameras and PIP processor are all Ebay. The Chasecam PVR is good, but pricey. I’d do Ebay for a PIP processor because Chasecam just wants too much for theirs. And dual PIP would require two Chasecam PIP processors and that’s crazy.

The beauty of Traqmate and the ChaseCam PVR is that you end up with automatically synched data and video. And that’s worth hours of post processing time.

I incorporated JP Coates photos.

I enjoyed my brief involvement in that battle.

:frowning:

By the way, I love the way you said “damn” in the video when I spun! :stuck_out_tongue:

Lol.

Traqmate records the data. See www.traqmate.com

TrackVision software allows you to create the video dashboard that shows instruments, g’s and trackmap. www.Trackvision.net

Chasecam makes high end video gear. www.chasecam. Their PVR (Personal Video Recorder) will play nice with Traqmate data logger. But you can get by on the cheap if you hit ebay for the camera(s) and video processor.

The video processor gives you the picture-in-picture (PIP). That allows an inset of rear cam and driver cam into video. 3 cameras feed to it, then one combined video feed goes to the Chasecam PVR (video recorder).

Listen to the audio of your video…just as I start to spin, you said “damn.”

Or am I hearing things? You have to turn the volume up a bit…

Here’s the view from the 401 of Saturday’s race: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8322403764909233799&hl=en

With Steve having pulled up beside me, we were 3-wide in T1, and other than seeing David’s car bobble off to the right, I didn’t see it happen. When I got on the short straight and realized there was no one behind me, that was not a good feeling…

The few laps of restart racing with IndyJim was a good time. He was holding onto that 6th place like a dog with a T-bone steak. I lined up several chances to get him, but none worked out.

Some Miata dude crashed the party on the last lap, making sure I didn’t get a final shot at Jim, but he was gonna be hard to get by regardless.

Scott, Thanks for posting the video. The Sunday race was fast, clean, and fun. You gave me two or three chances, but came out in front. That last lap was too intense!! As Scott said, from the point he passed me until 14, we were side by side. Too good. See you at RA.

You know, I’ve seen this wreck from every angle now; and if I had the race to do over again…I would still take the same line. In my mind, the inside line of a left turn would always seem to be the safest place to be. This was a very expensive accident, I can’t afford any more of them.
