In the now-common tradition of my car not surviving to race on Sunday at CMP, this weekend was no exception. The RR wheel bearing finally said “enough” over in tech, after the post-race timed vehicle escape drill.

As I tried to pull away, the wheel locked up, and was being dragged along the pavement. Bummer.

No one had the SIR tool at the track, so I borrowed a bearing from Julio, and will borrow the tools from Pantas and fix it today back in Atlanta.

But before that, I had a fun race on Saturday, up until the FCY. I qualified 8th and got to 6th at the start when Fred and Jared both missed shifts. I was hanging fairly close with the top-5, and the battle between McKay and Sandro was pretty fun to watch. They were definitely going at it.

Here’s the first half of the race from the 401

True confessions; started taking the RR apart today and when I pulled the rotor, the parking brake components (linkage, springs, shoes) all exploded on the floor in a shower of chewed-up metal. So, good news I don’t have to do a wheel bearing job. Bad news, I obviously could have fixed this at the track yesterday.

Race cars don’t have emergency brakes…as you can now call a failure point:sick:

Looks like some good racing over the weekend…

Awesome weekend!! Can’t wait for Rd Atl.

Big fun as usual. RR’s made for some fast lap times and close racing. congrats to eric for back to back podiums. Great racing with Sandro and Julio. Looking forward to RA. No video from Saturday and may have some from Sunday.
Saturday: qualified P2 and finsished P3. Sandro passed on last lap after restart.
Sunday: qualified P3 and finished 13th after clutch let go. Looks like some of us have repairs for RA to be done.

I had great fun. Now that I’m no longer doing 2 events/month, I’m reminded anew at each race weekend how good it is to see my buddies again and go racing.

No videos yet. The Sunday video isn’t playing well with TraqStudio so I’m having problem getting the dashboard on it.

Qual Saturday was my first hot laps in RR’s. I found myself agreeing that they are 2sec faster.

In Saturday’s race I started to realize that RR’s fall off awful damned fast. After 7-8laps, they don’t seem faster to me than RA1’s.

My excitement in Saturday’s race was trying to avoid hitting anyone in the Patton-Bauguess scrum. Cars were spinning just after the kink as I was setting up to enter the kink. I was pretty committed so I didn’t have a lot of choices. I decided to head left for the dirt, was only barely maintaining control, when Nash started coming back on track from the dirt…not realizing that I was barreling right for his path. Solely by charisma and force of will I made my car skitter across the grass with a bit more “righty” in the vector back towards the track, just enough to avoid smacking Nash. That put me back on the track, wheels sliding as much as rolling.

Me re-entering the track, or sliding across it if your a pessimist, caused problems for folks behind me, but screw them. 1) It’s all about me. 2) I was trying like hell to avoid killing Nash. 3) Those guys behind me were getting reaction time that I’d not had. And 4), it really is all about me.

Sunday I didn’t do all that well. I didn’t get a clear lap for qual, the power-on oversteer problem I’d been living with was getting worse, and I rear-ended a gts2 e36 going into 14.

The power on oversteer problem was bad. I was getting tons of wheel spin coming out of slow corners. The was a couple times I had 180deg of left steering input trying to keep my rear under me…that’s as much turning into a slide as I’ve ever had to do. But I was working with it, catching it, and accelerating out of 12 and 14 just as hard as I could. I had it under control. Until I didn’t. I spun it coming out of 14 and suddenly I was DFL. Shit.

The hit on the gts2 car was my fault. It seemed to me like he braked awful darn early going into 14, but unless the video shows him backing up into me, it has to be my fault. He was following Patton into 14, I made an estimate of when Patton would brake, when the gts2 car would brake, and when I’d need to brake. The same kind of thing that we all do every second. Which is when I hit him. The gts2 driver and I talked later. He was pissed.

Tonight I looked at my rear sway. When I installed it last Winter I’d set it on it’s loosest position so I’ve been thinking for some time on what I was going to have to do to make it looser yet. All my options were ugly, but I figured that either I needed to loosen that sway or I needed to pull out some rear camber.

So armed with some ideas I got under the car tonight to finalize the plan on just how I was going to drill the hole necessary to make the “full loose” rear sway, looser yet. Which is when I realized the sway was set to full tight, not full loose. Ah, well, that problem’s figured out.

Saturday vid. Mayhem at the kink. https://vimeo.com/59520712

Sunday vid, at least the first half of the race which is where all the fun was. It’s full of fabulous commentary to include why it was the GTS2 car’s fault that I rear ended him. Not until I reviewed the video did I realize that he inexplicably threw his car into reverse as he approached turn 14. His reverse lights gave him away. https://vimeo.com/59508692

Yes, of course I’m kidding. It was my fault.

Anyone have the cliffsnotes version of that?? ^

Sounds like an exciting weekend, Broderick’s car okay?

Ya know, I know the thunder roadster guys get a bad rap, and I’m somewhat biased because I used to have one, but I think them in lightning with us is a good thing. For the most part, they race clean, and it gives you something extra to think about and plan for. I like multi-class racing, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I will try to get my video pulled, edited and posted in the near future. There is some amusing overdriving in there to be sure.

Fun weekend, good time racing with Lako, Sandro and ScottM.

Grats to Eric (coach) on his wins, my view of his battle with Walsh on Sunday was a blast.

Old Geezer video of the first part of the Sunday race until things settled down.

Here’s video of Sundays race, when I decided to put an extra 4# of air on the two left tires… brilliant! It was a great weekend none the less!

Fun weekend all around for us. We chased an ABS problem all Saturday which caused me to destroy 3 tires and finish at the back of the pack . Eventually we realized that it was as simple as the alternator not charging properly. Another positive lesson from the ordeal was that I blew the right front tire completely out (something I always feared) and it was no where near as dramatic as I expected. In fact, it blew in T4 and I only noticed a vibration until turn 11. Scott threw a spare alternator on Saturday night and we were ready for Sunday.

Sundays race was really fun. Eric and I exchanged business cards down the front straight while waiting for turn one. At one point our tires matched which gave a quick snap towards one another but surprisingly didn’t leave a single mark on either car. We were side by side till he got the better of me in T3 and I tucked behind till the last lap. The thunder roadsters caught us after a few laps. I was hoping to use them to my advantage but Eric played it smart and the roadster guys came threw cleanly with no issue. On the last lap Eric and I were approaching a lap car and both of us had the same idea, “this pick setup can go one of two ways” The near pic looked like it would be in my favor as the checker was in sight and we were side by side through 14 but Eric went to 2nd giving him the extra RPM while I stayed in 3rd. Great race, ill take the 2nd with a big smile.

Unfortunately, neither of the two GoPros were running and I can’t figure out why.
Both had fully charged batteries, empty cards and were set to one button on. They both appeared to be recording , but in both cases, they only captured about a second of video as I turned them on initially . If anyone knows why please let me know!

The only real disappointment was that McKay was DQ’d.
I agree completely with the call because it was out regaurdless of why it was out.
I take responsibility because I set the car up to be dead on the rules.
I heard that the RRs were potentially wider and I ment to remeasure the car at the track after we got the tires from Sassco. Just to much other stuff was happening Saturday.
Sorry McKay , all me!

If you don’t mind me asking, what was the set up that was legal before and illegal after? Offset, spacers? Might be worthwhile to seek a rule change if every guy with the standard SE30 wheels (Dforce or whatever) and no spacers all become illegal without buying new wheels!

#15

The set up was with aluminum spacers and can easily be remedied.
We initially turned the spacers down to size using a brake lathe. it will be easy enough to cut a bit more using the same method.

Guess follow the leader didn’t work too well.

Good to have met you and best of luck getting the se30 cranked-up in Flordia. Let us know how we can help you.

Interesting how after-action videos can contrast with real-time perceptions. I can see from your vid that you had no choice but to move right and avoid Bauguess. Meanwhile I was bearing down on you from right-rear thinking “FOR GOD’S SAKES DON’T MOVE RIGHT, OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT”. It seemed at the time that it was a 30sec struggle to coax my car a little more right to avoid you. But my video shows that it was really a 2sec struggle.

The moral to the story? Don’t drive midpack! Heh. Just kidding, sort of. Glad the damage wasn’t worse, and it was a fun time.

It will be shortly. Patton helped me out with parts and we will be at Road Atlanta next month. really disappointed having a solid race qualified poorly but making strong and steady progress toward the upper end of the field.
