CMP Race results

Congratulatios to Sandro for his two race wins this weekend.
Believe it or not, the wins were his first in the Spec E30 class. (Yes, he did in an IFU at RR last year.)

Also congratulations to a new person in the top three. Laura Parkhurst was second in Saturday’s race, only needing one final corner to be first, but Sandro got her in t14. She kept the good mojo and turned the driving over to Danny Parkhurst to race his first NASA event in the #911 on Sunday. He started from the back and made up some positions in the race.

Other race reports?

Weather was great! I qualified 3rd on Saturday with a 1:53:9. I was hoping to battle Sandro again at CMP but I guess he decided to run some fresh tires this event so he checked out early during the first half of Saturday’s race. During the double yellow, I looked down and noticed my water temps were super high so I decided to call it a race and not risk a motor for a coveted NASA coffee cup. I was really bummed that I didn’t get a chance to battle for the podium and tire $$, but I got to watch the end of the race where Laura was fighting off Sandro.

On Sunday I qualified 3rd with a personal best of 1:53:0. The E30s started in the first group with the GTS and miata’s mixed in. On the start, Al got the lucky bump and I got to battle him until T5 where he lost it. Ryan got pushed off into the sand-gravel at the T3 exit but managed to get back on track only losing a few places. A lap or so later I got to watch a deer run in front on Sandro between T7 and T8. We were running great until the double yellows came out to pickup a Porsche and Thunder Roach. Then all the TRs were lined up right behind us on the restart. It didn’t take long and we were dealing with the swarm of 15+ roaches which made the race quite interesting. Sandro maintained a comfortable lead while Ryan an I battled for second. I finished in 3rd (my first SE podium finish), just a few seconds behind Ryan.

Congrats to Al, Sandro, Ryan and Laura on their top 3 finishes during the weekend. I’m hoping to see the posted results soon.

Oops, congratulations Paul, didn’t realize it was your first top 3 in the SE. Didn’t you have a top three with the MA guys at VIR.

Good run, goodrun for all Spec E30 cars as there was no contact within our group of cars. ( I won’t count the solo thing with Jon in the tire barrier that crunched a front fender.)

Thanks Robert for mentioning the big off. I did it all by myself on Saturday’s first lap of qualifying. Although I thought I was playing conservative, apparently I went into the kink too hot with an early apex. So, I was quickly too far track left, with two off. The back end came out, starting 180 spin and slide into the tire wall track right. No other cars, just me, the kink, sand and grass. Fortunately, it was a mild slam and only the driver fender was pushed in. I re-started the car and completed the qual session. There was no damage to the tire wall, so no extra charge for the extra thrill!

Back at the trailer, I popped the fender out enough with a crowbar for good tire clearance. no problem the rest of the weekend.

Otherwise, a good weekend (except the food Saturday night was especially weak). A small turnout of SE30’s, so we mixed in with the Miatas and TR’s - always a good time;) Danny drove a good race on Sunday, passing me and working through a lot of traffic. I chased Cofer both days, but only saw his rear bumper. Congrats to Sandro, Laura, and Paul for top finishes. Big Al was present with a few new stories and the Big Mercedes sedan. Perfect driving weather.

I had a great weekend, running Greg Smith’s (thanks!) practice RR’s…figured they were good for 4th. Was able to catch Paul but my tires were gone and the FCY saved me…Sandro and Paul spinning off on TR oil and Ryan getting totally screwed in turn 3 after the restart meant I was 1st. Was able to check out and turn a respectable lap 153.4? but had fun watching Laura and Sandro battle in my rear view. When I have a legal car and fresh RR’s yall are in trouble at CMP.

Sunday got a good start and was going to run Sandro down but my tires said otherwise, went off at 5 and waited for the whole field to pass before reentering…had fun battling Stoup and then had a great side by side race with Cofer, we went 3 wide into 8/9 with a TR to the inside, we hit mirrors and from then I could not see anything and just cooled it till the finish. As much as my car was sliding I can not believe there was no contact Sunday with the herd of roaches that came through after the restart. Saturday’s starting order was the way to go…

great weather also…maybe we can Jim to have Gus’s deliver a bunch of pizza’s out there one time…Also watching the Thunder Roach battle, I can see why they have taken over our spot as biggest class. They are a bunch of lunatics but it looks like they are having fun.

I know this is amazing, but for once in my life I have video!!! It’s only from the re-start on Saturday, but should be some good footage.

Saturday’s Race

I had a blast! Let’s just say that the restart worked to my advantage and then I did not want to give up my spot in line. Great racing by all parties and I can’t wait to do it again.

What an awesome weekend. Saturday’s race was the most exciting by far, after the spin at the hairpin due to some oil dropped by a TR, fell back to 6th, then I got a good start passed Colin, then caught up to Laura, where I had the most fun! I challenged Laura at every turn and she did not flinched, even accepted the challenge to go side-by-side at the kink and came out ahead w/o loosing control, lost the lead one tiny mistake at the hairpin on the last lap where coming out of it was a yellow, so we maintained until the next FS, great racing!! Gotta give to Al, he won Saturday! great drive man. We have to ask Carter for an exception for him and the Fire Engine! Sunday was uneventful, my biggest challenge was putting the car into 3rd, tranny is gone! gotta put a junker for RA then put the #32 to rest! I learned something Sunday, please tell me if I’m wrong; while leading a double yellow came out and I came to a crawl in order to bunch up the field and make it easier for the pace car to catch up with me sooner, so we could get more racing laps in. I’ve noticed when the double yellow come out the leaders drive at 90%, this, in my mind, minimizes the racing laps. I don’t know about you guys and gals, but I don’t think we get enough racing laps and this would be a good way to increase them. See you all at RA! Again, GREAT JOB Laura!!! Looking to race you soon!

Sandro, I think you are correct about the race leader slowing for the pace car and I’ll double check this with Pantas.

19.6.1 Leading Vehicle Pace Car
During a full course yellow condition, the driver in the overall lead is expected to slow down and essentially function as a Pace Car, until such a time as the Pace Car can properly pick up the lead. To assist the leading driver in determining when he/she is expected to temporarily function as a pace car, a number board displaying their vehicle number will be displayed at some point along the course, accompanied by a sign displaying the phrase “PACE CAR.”

Thanks, Rob. I’m never in the lead, and our Spec e30 cars usually start in the rear of the field and do not have the chance to lead.

It’s quite rare for a SE30 to be in the overall lead. :woohoo:
