Clutch/Flywheel upgrade time - Valley Motorwerks?

#1

So - I think I’m close to time for a new clutch. I went shopping and came across this…

http://dev.vmwerks.com/proddetail.asp?prod=cm3&cat=105

from the bottom of the description -

Heavy duty pressure plate and segmented Kevlar disc for exceptional holding power & long life. Firm, positive pedal feel. The perfect clutch for aggressive drivers that still desire smooth engagement. Clutch Masters’ Stage 3 clutches utilize a segmented Kevlar disc. This will provide more holding power than Stage 1, yet it still offers exceptionally smooth driveability and long life. Combined with an aluminum flywheel, this an excellent performance upgrade for your SpecE30. This will be the LAST clutch you ever buy!

Emphasis is mine. Are lightweight or aluminum flywheels legal? I’d love to do this once and correctly - and not miss out on something after I get my new setup. Thanks!

9.3.12.6. Any clutch disc and pressure plate of original diameter may be used provided that
they bolt directly to an unmodified stock flywheel.

Aluminum flywheels are not legal… these are on our development site and not all the item descriptions have been edited. We use this assembly on our cars with the OEM flywheel. Since we’re doing standing starts in NorCal we always get the jump on everyone else since they are slipping off the line.

Item fixed BTW thanks for pointing it out.

Just checking - I know so little about that part of the damn car - and it is the only part that is not working correctly right now.

Tranny sounds fine with the clutch pedal in, rattles like a diesel with the clutch out in neutral. I know “they all do that” but damn - not like this. Someone said it was the throw out bearing, but I understand the sound should be the opposite (noise with clutch in - mine is clutch out. Someone else said “Pilot bearing (?)” Don’t even know what that is.

Thing is - everyone says “while you’re in there - replace the clutch”. So - that is why I’m shopping…

Thanks Walter - I’ll be giving you guys a call.

Substantial advantage off the line, I’ll probably be adding one as well.

John, with the clutch released and you have noise in neutral it is the input shaft bearing on the gearbox. If it aint broke, don’t fix it. Call and I’ll offer some further school-of-hard-knocks advice.

+1 about removing the trans to fix the input shaft bearing. However it is bad otherwise it would not be making noise. If you want a better clutch we’re always here to help but I would not remove the trans just to fix the rattle…

So - in my journey here - I was once scared to change oil for fear of screwing stuff up. That was before the starter replacement, which was my turning point. Since then, shocks, struts, control arms, valve gaskets, radiators, calipers and the like tremble in my presence! The line I have drawn so far is any lubricated parts, or things that do not normally see the light of day. This stuff qualifies. Glad I posted up on here before an innocent clutch saw the light!

Robert - I’ll ping you on this - thanks!

I got a good laugh out of your post. Life is that way isn’t it? What was mysterious yesterday is common today. I feel the same way about the human body, don’t open it up unless you have to!!
