Clutch blew

#1

Going into T1 at VIR on Sunday, my clutch disk exploded.

Here is what the disk looked like when it came out.

It’s interesting that the date stamp on the disk was 3/87. The car was manufactured 4/87. So it looks like the original disk lasted 245K miles plus all the track abuse.

While the transmission was out, I was going to add a hose to the breather hole but the hole was dry with no signs of any recent leak. Only the front seal looked wet. Jim (mechanic working on the car) said that there is no way to stop the fluid leak on E30. Best thing to do is to top it up before an event.

Chi,

That looks better than the one that came out of my car a year ago and better than most clutches that come out of E30s. You got your money’s worth.

We have been running stock or e30 M3 clutches in 2 cars for 2 plus years…ours doesn’t look like yours, is it some kind of trick part? was flywheel surfaced before install??

No trick part.

From the date code, I am guessing it’s the original stock OEM disk from the factory. It looks weird because all of the friction material has been striped off from the disk.
