clank when starting

I just replaced my clutch and now I have this (expensive sounding) clank just as I hit the starter. No noises when the car is running and the new clutch seems to work fine. Any ideas about what’s wrong?

I hate to admit this, but the second time I ever changed a clutch (cocky after my first successful attempt), I put the pressure plate on crooked (it never seated flush). Sounds exactly as you are describing. It rubbed on the inside of the bell housing on each revolution… my old GTi. Anyway, just a suggestion.

Thanks for the info! It’s hard to tell from the sound exactly what’s happening. Another possibility I thought of is that maybe the pressed steel spacer slid out of position when I was reinstalling the trans and maybe the starter is hitting that. Either way it sounds like I’m going to have to pull the transmission again.
