Cheap Paint Job?

#1

Anyone know what I should expect to pay for a cheap paint job from MAACO, etc. I have the car stripped down to bare metal, bumpers, grill, ligths, trim out/off. Thanks in advance.

No more than $500. Tell’em it’s a race car.

I did all the prep work as well and paid $500 for a Maaco job that turned out great for the money. I think it was $399 for the paint and then $100 for clearcoat which you don’t even have to do. More than worth the money if you need some paint.

Ask them if they have any specials going on. They’ll usually make something up for you if they don’t.

Maaco quoted me about $600 to do a single stage one color paint job. I debated spraying it myself but it would not have been much cheaper and I’d have had to deal with the mess. Then I found an alternate method.

This was painted with two quarts of paint and foam rollers and brushes. It’s the same method used to paint boats. I used boat paint, which has a very high gloss straight from the can. You can also use Rustoleum but you’ll need to buff the final coat to get a high gloss. I did the entire car in two tone with all the materials for about $200. The only downside is it takes about a week of evenings to do it as it requires several coats to get good coverage. I have several links on my web page to teach you how to do it. Looks every bit as good as a Maaco job plus I get to see people’s faces when I told them it was painted with a roller.

$100, rustoleum pro. You can choose between black, white, red, gray, and yellow…in order of ease of application. I’m not kidding, it is as good as a single stage maaco job.

I would use a paint color you can get in a can off the shelf at Autozone or similar parts store. It makes those simple touch ups and tire marks easier to get rid of.

farm equipment paint in cans is good for that.
Allis Chalmers orange FTW!

the new rustoleum “universal” spray cans also look interesting for ease of use

I did my interior and greenhouse with top shelf rattle cans from Osh, primer and Machine Grey. $5.09 each (the good stuff! - my index finger hurt for days  ) Actually looks some better than the rest of the body which has the factory black. Of course I’ve been touching the black up with rattle cans for years and it is definitely NOT a show car but looks plenty like a race car.
