Center Net?

#1

Anyone got pics or tips on mounting the center net. I just picked up the car from the cage guy. I think I have the forward part figured out. Just want to clarify that the rest of the net wraps around the seat and straps to the main hoop???

There is a good diagram in the NASA CCR. It shows the top strap at about ear level and the bottom strap at shoulder level. The anchor points that you choose will depend what net design you have and your cage design. Just try a couple anchor ideas and see what positions the net per that diagram. I’ve tried several ideas and none of them are perfect.

Thanks Scott, but am I correct that the net wraps around the seat, and straps to the main hoop?

I sat in the car with the cage guy to figure out where to mount the forwared mounting point so it would be the correct height per the diagram you refer to, but just a little confused on the rest.

Definately around the seat, so anchor points will be behind the driver and/or behind driver’s left shoulder. Not necessarily to the main hoop, it depends on your cage design. There’s so many different bar configurations that there’s all sorts of ways to skin this cat. Orient not on the main hoop, but on trying to put the net where it belongs relative to the driver, and going around the back of the seat. Then figure out anchor points that seem to do it.

I’m installing mine on Saturday. I’m actually mounting mine to the seat because it’s having to stretch out a little further to the left of the dash. I went a little cheap on the net ($60 one from Discovery) as oppose to the nice C5R net. I guess it’s ok as long as it lines up, only thing it seems to get in the way of my arm a little, still playing around with it.

I don’t believe you want to mount the net to the seat. Why aren’t you planning to attach it to the main hoop over the driver’s left shoulder as its designed to do? If not long enough, there are strategies to come up with different forward mounts that will give you additional length.

The rules don’t require specific mounting approach, but do say “It is best to follow the manufacturer’s suggestions for installation of any safety device.”

Don’t you want more than “I guess it’s OK” for your safety gear?

Well, I talked to Jim and we looked at it together and mounting to the seat was the best option. It is too short to mount to the cage, but fits well to the seat.

Why wouldn’t it serve it’s purpose being attached to the seat? It is suppose to keep your head in place and this way it’s even closer to my helmet, which I would think is a plus, not a minus.

the net holds not only your head, but also the seat from moving right in an accident. You want it aiming roughly straight ahead towards the dash, not off to the right - otherwise it won’t really stop your head. You can attach a strap or cord behind the dash that comes through the dash, then attach your net to that to give it more length.

You bought the wrong net. Must have bought it at the same store as the suit.

See these photos for an example of how the net should wrap around the rear of the seat: http://www.ffrchallenge.com/right_side_net/right_side_net.html

Improperly installed safety equipment can cause more problems than it solves. DO NOT attach your right side net TO the seat. Attach it so it goes AGAINST the seat.

Even if you thought it was ok, it is highly unlikely you’ll pass your annual tech with an improperly mounted center net.

As a general rule, don’t fudge your safety dude. Stuff is designed for a reason.

Take another look at how you have the front of your net fastened and get some more slack. Otherwise, Discovery Parts is your friend.

Do not mount the net to the seat unless you can prove that the manufacturer states that it can be mounted that way. If you are at tech when I am at the track I will fail the net and you will have to fix it before you can go on track.
Better to spend the time to have it installed properly before you get to the track.

Any suggestions for front mounting point of the center net? I’ve got the two rear mounting points down, but the front single point is questionable right now.

I’ve got mine going through where the center vents are in the dash and then wrapped around the cage dash bar. I think some people have bolted it to the firewall as another option.

yeah, wrap around dash bar… i’d like to use center vents for gauges, so might go under through the radio slot.

Search old posts. There are several good pictures on mounting points. I posted a few a few years ago.

Very helpful. Now I need to move my forward connection point to something closer to the centerline of the car, maybe a little higher too…

Thanks!
