Center Net Install (one more time please)

#1

Hi Folks

I’ll be doing this mod to a 88 325IS with no dashbar and the dash in place.

How long of a drill bit do you need to get thru the firewall?

Does the hole end up poking thru inside the compartment where the defroster motor sits?

If the defroster still functional after you bore thru it?

Is it easy to damage any wires when boring thru?

Any details on this job you could provide would be very helpful.

Thanks

I did mine maybe a little differently…

I too have no dash bar - so, I used a big backing plate that came with my belts (I used other backing plates. I drilled a hole where a passenger would put their toe if they pushed their toe as far up and inboard as they could. I used a regular drill bit to do it.

I punched out the far right hand dial on the center vent with a screwdriver and hammer. I fed the strap through, connected it to the eyelet and I have a pretty straight shot from the vent to the eyelet. No muss, no fuss, and it is very secure.

Here are my pics - through the dash next to the radio surround, then bolted through near the power block

Thanks all for the replies.

Has this style of mounting passed tech everywhere?

I run in BMWCCA and there are grumblings about this type of mount for the center net being to far off center and to low.

Any comments?

Center nets are now mandatory in BMWCCA, so they need to pass tech.

We modeled our mount off of a koni challenge car. It passed tech at NASA nationals in 2007.

If I were to do it again, I would do what Ken Neuhoff did however. I believe he took a long bit (like you might use in construction work) and bored through the defroster duct work/box and mounted about 6-8 inches toward center and about 2 inches higher than our mount. That being said, I feel very safe with our system, and it worked well in my crash at CMP.
