Car #'s size and contrast

#1

Flaggers and Control are apparently having some problems making out car #'s. They did not mention SpecE30 specifically. The NASA CCR says the numbers on the side should be at least 10" tall. Our CCR says 8" and class CCR supersedes.

Off the top of my head I can’t think of anyone that has only 8" #'s on the side. But if you do, I’d supersize that # a bit even tho you’re within the rules. Also, if there isn’t A LOT of contrast between all 4 of your # decals and everything else, don’t be shocked if you get told in Impound that you need to find some more contrast before the next event.

I was flagging T4 this weekend and can confirm. When 15+ cars go whizzing past you in 5 seconds it can be difficult to catch the number of the car. Luckily I know most of the Spec E30 cars  . The majority of the problems I called in were with DE cars just not having numbers at all  . Contrasting colors are good, but bigger is better when it comes to numbers. Sometimes an incident happens so far away from the flag station and its difficult to see smaller numbers.

There is something to be said for BMWCR’s number boards. At the Barber event I was in race control, which has the the most amazing video camera system you’ll find anywhere (good enough to see and identify an axle nut on track). But we had a car off (light gray with white numbers and an added light blue number) and we could not tell what the number was. If the car had the BMWCR boards it would have been “a piece of cake”. Black on white is max contrast.

Even though that’s what I have on my car right now (BMW CR number boards) I’m not really a fan. Too corporate looking. Looks like a memo. :stuck_out_tongue:
