Car # 36 Dyno #'s

#1

I uploaded my dyno sheet from Mid-Ohio. Taking a picture of the hard copy is as good as I could do.

I was quite surprised with the results. Granted it was cooler than the nationals in September so that helped some. The engine with unknown mileage came on a pallet with the car as was to replace the one in the car with 231K miles and a broken timing belt. I took off the head and hand seated the valves with lapping compound and the suction cup thing. Cleaned it up and replaced all the gaskets and the timing belt. I installed a crank scraper, new plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Using a paper filter and stock air box. Installed an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Of course a stock chip in a 173 ECU. Have a 71* T-Stat and run Mobil 1 10W30. Stock Oil Cooler. Exhaust is the R. Patton Special of 2 pipes from the cross over to the back with two glass packs, dimples pointed to the engine.

The dip is from the AFM and was able to be felt on the track. I replaced it with a better one and the dip went away but somehow the car seems to loose power half way through a race. Also has a CE light saying Vehicle speed not present. The Speedo is on and off but not necessarily when the CE light comes on. Any ideas on why so lean during the first half of the RPM range? Could that have been the AFM? I was not able to get back on the dyno after the AFM change. Also, why looking power? Temp sensor? Still a bad AFM? How about torque? How do I get a little more?

Any ideas welcome. I have been told that it was impossible to see 150 without a chip and am glad that it is possible. I am sure a chip would widen the torque range and make the curve a little better but we all have to live with the same issues.

Give me some input.

are there data smoothing settings on a dynojet? Your runs seem a lot choppier than the other ones.

I am not sure what the settings were if they even used any smoothing at all.

Mike, it looks like you’ve got a good engine.
I’ve got a 120k junkyard engine in my newest car that has a slightly bigger dip at 4000-5000 than the Taxi engine. But, overall it is the strongest of the three that I own (Police car is #3).

Looks like you’ve discovered some power enhancements by way of the scraper and low viscosity oil. However, I cannot put a before and after number to those changes. Do you have data on the fuel pressure changes as it was my experience that it was a power loss due to the oxygen sensor monitoring the A/F ratio and making adjustments. There was a long thread on fuel presure some time ago.

Just because the Police car is his slowest doesn’t mean it isn’t competitive in a straight line.

Skeen, you are correct. The Police car is strong too. It is #3 by 3-4 hp and 2-3 on torque. And it only took 2.5 years and a bolt dropped into an injector hole to get that engine sorted-out. Laura’s got some straightaway talent. She also has a standing offer to swap cars…but she likes the brakes in the Police car over the brakes in the Taxi or the 303.

See you at Roebling Road.

I’ll swap with you, Robert.
