Cameras required for SE Region SpecE30's .

The group voted on this at RA over the weekend. I don’t recall that there were any dissenters. This essentially follows in the footsteps of Mid-Atl which requires all racers have cameras.

Specifics:

  1. Forward facing cameras are required for all SpecE30’s at SE races. Note that this includes out-out-of region cars.

  2. If you show up and find that you need a camera, borrow one. I always have a spare and others are likely too. If you absolutely cannot find a camera to borrow, talk to Robert and I and we’ll figure something out.

  3. Joint events with neighboring regions. If a joint event is out-of-region, at Barber or Daytona for example, then this rule applies to only SE drivers. If the joint event is within our region, then it applies to all SpecE30’s.

  4. Most cameras record to some type of SD cards these days. If you have a camera that uses a different media, have a means available to put the video file on someone else’s computer.

  5. “Sorry, my camera failed.” This happens to everyone occasionally. Don’t be the guy who would have had the critical footage to exonerate someone.

Good move. For all timed sessions, or races only?

#3

That’s a good point. Lets see what the community says.

My preference is all timed sessions. Bad shit doesn’t only happen when there’s a beer mug at stake.

If nothing interesting happens, one can always clear the memory, juice up the unit, and be ready for the next session.

Like the idea alot but i feel there should be no penalties for failure to record. Sometimes cameras and/or brains don’t work.

#6

Well, you’d certainly lose the benefit of the doubt if you don’t record.

#7

True but most of the time it’s the camera behind the incident that gets it on film. I would hate to be penalized if I was asked to provide video and the camera didn’t record even though I was not part of the incident.

Well I guess since I am in Birmingham I am now in MidSouth but I only do races with the SE. I have always run a camera for EVERY session. Both from a “rules infraction” standpoint and for my personal use to compare with Traqmate date. It would be good practice, even if it is not “required”, to be strongly encouraged. Something else to think about to help promote the new rule is 1 strike. The cars that are teched after the race must also produce video to prove that they are in compliance with the new rule. You get one freebee since another post was worried about the mental factor of not turning the camera on or whatever reason may be that the camera didn’t produce a recording. Plus with a laptop and a couple of cables this would be easy to do. I LOVE that this rule is going into place and I think it should help with the accountability factor for us racers. Just my two cents. ALLEN

I prefer to have my camera on and recording at all times when I am driving on the race track. Stupid can strike at any moment. This past weekend at RA my camera spared me a DQ for passing under yellow that never happened but was called in by a corner worker. We spend thousands of dollars on our cars and thousands more to actually go out and race them. A couple hundred bucks is a relatively inexpensive investment. I agree that there shouldn’t be any penalties for failure to comply. But when an incident happens on track and you swear you weren’t at fault, or said event never happened… well you’re going to be SOL without indisputable video evidence!

Another good reason to have a camera onboard - to verify arrogant #$%# in that other German brand.

The second hit was the TFB E30 ESR whatsit. Both drivers I hear were OK, but if you know Thunderhill, you know that is one of the worse corners get T-boned.

No penalties for failure to record, and I’d say that its only necessary for the race. I forget to charge the battery until lunch half the time.

#12

My camera is on EVERY time I am on track.

If everyone knows that everyone is packing an operating camera at all times, then the chances of talking ones way out of an ill-advised decision is reduced.

Record em all, all the time, I say. I agree should not be penalty for failure to record, but we all have an interest in reducing the bad decisions, so the more fully everyone gets with the program, the more effective it can be. That’s kind of the crux of it.

Wow, I am finally catching up on all of these threads in anticipation of my March return to racing, and I am amused that this thread exists considering that I just finished reading “1984.”

is this where you got your idea Scott, lol!
