Camber tool?

#1

While driving at Putnam Park a few weeks ago I noticed my neutral steering wheel position had changed a bit. Checking the rear toe with camber plates indicated that I had about 1/2" of toe out; not good. Over this last weekend, I decided to attempt my own alignment. I used the Jim Levie tip with magazines under the tires with all four wheels resting on CMU blocks. I took two 70" pieces of 1" conduit, drilled a hole at each end excatly 66" apart, and then placed one tube at each end of the car resting on top of jack stands and running perpindicular to how the car travels. I stretched string between the front and back holes in the conduit on both sides of the car and then squared up the strings by measuring at the hubs on each corner.

With this setup, I was able to identify that my left rear wheel was the problem and the three other corners didn’t need adjustment. After grinding down a 19mm wrench, I was able to easily adjust the outer toe adjuster. 3/8 turn on the adjuster brought the tie back to zero toe (absolute.

I don’t have a good method for measuring camber or caster; my camber measuring Android app doesn’t provide a high level of precision. What are other racers using to measure camber? Is the Longacre camber/caster device that interfaces with wheel hubs a good tool for the E30?

Camber bubble thingee from Longacre does the trick…everytime. Bubbles and flat surfaces are amazing things.

I’m with Robert. The Longacre gage is accurate and good value for the money.

Jim and Robert, thanks for the advice. I just ordered the Longacre tool. Will the magnetic adapter fit inside the with wheel hub okay?

This works really well. Fred S, Al K and I got together and bought it last year. http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/product/2097/Caster_Camber_Gauges

I found that my local shop’s alignment table was off, and that my alignment needs tweeking after every couple of events.

I haven’t used these, but they look pretty slick.

Those sure would be easy to make. Something else for the winter project list.
