CA Racing / Dumb New Guy Question

#1

Hi All,

I just picked up my project car yesterday ('89 325i - blown engine) and have another dumb question as a new guy in the group, especially being from California…

Do guys try to keep their E30’s street legal (especially fun here in CA with our smog police) or do they make them track only? I’m thinking of the exhaust setup options and sensors, etc.

Besides getting my German Car shop started on the engine, my first course of action is deciding whether to register the car out here, or just keep the title as a momento.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Doug and Welcome. There are few of us in CA – most in SF Bay Area and couple in SoCal. Where are you at? If you plan on trailering the car to track I wouldn’t register it. I think that for the first season I’ll drive to the track so I’ll have to register it.

Regards,
Igor

Hi Igor,

Thanks for the reply and the welcome, we talked before through the forum when I was first getting interested. I’m in Pacifica. I’ve got a trailer that I’m currently using for racing in SCCA with a Spec Racer Ford, so I’m kind of used to having to tow my race car everywhere, but I’d like to have the option to drive it to my shop that will be supporting the car. (The fellow who owns the shop is my race partner in the trailer…)

I’m really looking forward to this class and getting involved with NASA. I’ve got a lot to learn!

My contact info is:

Looking forward to meeting you.

There are a number of people here in the southeast that keep their cars street legal, but it’s quite a bit easier here than in CA. There’s really no reason they can’t stay legal, except you may not be competitive with a cat on the exhaust. Maybe if you "know someone" in the inspection business… well, you know.

Doug:

It’s good to have another West Coast guy in the group. Keep us up to date on your plans.
