Bumper/Valence Question...

#1

Hey guys and girls,
I have a question about the rules…9.3.13.3 and 9.3.13.3.1. I am building a 89 325i with the desireable plastic bumpers. The rules state that you may use an "aftermarket front one piece bumper/spoiler unit, provided the original crash bar is maintained." Can you remove the front valence if you go this route? I was thinking of making my own cover/spoiler out of fiberglass. What do the rules specify? Peace.

Hey, be careful around here when you throw around terms like "desireable plastic bumpers"!

My interpretation is that you can remove the valence.
Correct me if I’m wrong, Carter --I haven’t removed mine yet.

grydemon, here’s mine:

As long as a custom, hand-made piece falls under the heading of "aftermarket" I don’t see why it wouldn’t be legal. Before spending much time on this, though, I’d keep in mind that any off-track excursion or bumping might put you back to work on bumper #2, #3… pretty quickly. I added a splitter before Buttonwillow, which did not survive a very minor run through the dirt during the race. :S

I’m not an expert at the one piece bumper thing. Contact Mike Mills (West coast Spec E30 man) for his interpretation.

But honestly, I would spend time and money on something else…unless you just want to do it. It’s safe to say that no one has won or lost a race (or a position for that matter) because of his front bumper/spoiler.

I’ve made a point to keep my car as simple as possible and it’s served me well so far.

But if you decidde to do it, let us know what Mike says and what you end up doing.

Han,

Can I borrow your car next year when it snows to shovel the driveway?

That sucker is serious!!!

The whole idea behind this is, I have started to learn how to fiberglass, and would like to tackle a one piece plastic bumper/lower valence made out of fiberglass. It would be pretty easy, and ouldn’t mind being forced back to the original if it got damaged. Can I remove the valence to save some weight?

I am reluctant to post only part way into my build…

The air dam pictured seems way outside of the intent of a spec class.
