Build cost

#1

I think I got most of it. Please add 10% or more since I have a discount and didn’t include shipping or tax. I didn’t think of the cost at all before I started I just bought a car and went at it thinking I could do a build cheaper than anyone else. There is no labor included and anything with a 0 means I fabricated it myself. The seat I bought 10 years ago for a failed h-production Fiat X-1/9 build. It was FIA certified at the time so add 400 for a decent seat. I’m also sure that I skipped a bunch of hardware and wires so add another 1 or 2 hundred for that. Add another 60 for fitting adapters. My total is 10429.99 plus the last things I listed.

Damn I keep remembering other little things I bought. Just add 20% if your building it yourself and at least 10% if your making parts yourself. Heres the excel doc. Add 4 or 5k for all the tools that I bought.

I just remembered I had to replace both front control arms. Anyway basic from scratch to full build think 14k. I’ll work with the spreadsheet a liitle more when I’m sober.

#4

That’s a good effort, wtg.

$64 for your harness? I just paid $315.

#5

Racequip. It looks just like every other 5 pt latch link with an sfi label. I think latch links are just as safe as the camlocks.

#6

i spent just under 11k on my last car, i could look up the expense sheet, but the only thing we didn’t do was rear subframe, and drivetrain.

#7

Yeah, I buy the RCI Platinum’s from Summit for $69.95. They are SFI but come with a re-cert certificate for an additional 2 years.

WTF dude? Delete that post. For crying out loud have you lost your mind? You think we WANT to know this kind of thing?

#10

The n00bs need to know. I know it cost way more to get racing then I ever thought it would.

#11

Definitely good to know, but Ranger’s pro’ly right. If my CFO ever gets wind of your list, it’ll be 2100 before I see track time.

#12

We do NOT want to see that list - and I certainly don’t want my WIFE to see that list!!! Mods, can we get that post removed for all of our marital stability? :stuck_out_tongue:
The n00bs need to know. I know it cost way more to get racing then I ever thought it would.
Finally a good excuse to use that “Report to Moderator” button.

You’re about make me waste a few hours AGAIN pondering “How much of OPM would I need to buy to be a silent partner and not give the IRS grounds to rape me when I pass all my racing expenses through as ‘promotional expenditures’?” It sure would be nice to use pre-tax dollars to do this stuff…

#14

Dude, that’s what the 401k’s for.

#15

Agreed. There’s been a number of times I considered pulling money out of my 401k to pay for this.

#16

What is this 401K you speak of?

#17
What is this 401K you speak of?
I think it’s just another term for ‘having a wife’. Twice a month a chunk of money disappears from my paycheck with no apparent short-term benefit.

PS - Pulling money from the 401k makes racing itself look like a good financial decision.

Anyone ever invest in sportscar leases to fund their retirement?

#20

What is this paycheck you speak of? My CFO occasionally makes some vague references to weird financial stuff like “income” and “free cash flows” but the only one I’m really familiar with is “debt”.

Pulling cash out of your 401k is only bad if you don’t put it back in time.
