Brake Rotors

#1

I ordered new brake rotors from Bimmerworld, OEM’s. I got solid rear discs, and vented front discs. Is that OEM? I thought I was buying solids front discs as well, something I remembered reading about vented discs cracking.

all of the fronts are vented.

I think he’s talking about cross drilled rotors when he refers to venting, which yes are entirely more crack prone than plain OE rotors. I’ve seen guys fracture thru the entire rotor as opposed to just plain surface cracks on street pads. If you get anything the slotted rotors will be much less prone to cracking than the cross drilled ones

Vented, non-slotted or drilled are stock (Balo, Brembo) for front, and from my experience over the last 2 years are the best option. Run them until have have bad cracks, them pitch them. Rears last about 3 to one over fronts.

No Greg, these are just vented. I didn’t even look at the one’s on my car, and the quick look I gave Steve’s and Damion’s cars, I thought thiers were solid. These are Brembo rotors. New and shiny.

Sorry, not trying to be a smart ass but there never seems to be a good time or place to go through the "proper" bedding in procedure as recommended by the pad manufacturers. Most times you are changing pads at the track with no place to bed them in so I use my warm up lap and the first hot lap to test/bed mine in.

above is a link to Hawk’s recommended procedure which I think is pretty generic.

Here’s another version from BMW DIY.

that one can only be performed by a "trained master mechanic" B)

also, appears to be for organic pads and doesn’t really jive with other procedures I’ve read for performance pads

No not being a smart ass at all. That sounds about right. That was kind of my point, when I put new pads on there really is no way to go through the proper bedding procedure. This sounds good though.

Thanks
