Brake Rotor Life Expectancy

#1

Granted, this is somewhat of a loaded question, but approximately how many races/DE sessions/weekends etc do you guys get out of a set of front rotors?

I’m using Hawk HT10’s in the front, HP+ in the back, backing plates and 3" ducting and getting about 3 weekends (2 de’s, 1 race) out of a set before they are splintering/spidering pretty bad. Is that about right? I’ll post a pic later tonight to show the "cracking" so far (after 3 events).

My experience is the E30 rotors will splinter/spider pretty is that amount of time but still have plenty of life left. As long as none of the cracks are through the rotor and no brake shake is developing keep on going.

I want to say my last set of rotors lasted two race weekends and four or five DE weekends.

Ok, so I’m on schedule. I realize it’s track dependent (Road Atlanta is hard on brakes), driving style, etc, but I wanted to see if I was in the ballpark and that I should think of rotors as more "consumable" than what I had thought originally.

Greg, drive slower, don’t use the brakes and you should be able to get a year out of them before the cracks get too deep/the cracks break thru.

Seriously, a year.

My frozen rotors lasted 4 times as long as brembo replacements.

I’m not kidding.

Robert, an interesting quote just came to mind, which I’ll edit for my purposes:

[Murdock aka Patton]:
"Geiger, this is Patton, we’re glad you’re alive. Where are ya? Give us your position and we’ll come to pick you up."
[Rambo aka Geiger]:
"Patton… I’m coming to get you."

Smack talking apparently just began. Game on for Roebling

For anyone who is unfamiliar with what we might be talking about…

That seems like pretty short life. Are there any brands/suppliers that are better than others?

Frozen rotors are the best i’ve used. Hands down. They aren’t cheep but are roughly twice the price and last 4 times as long.

So, how much should we read into the fact that you equate yourself with Rambo?

For historical purposes, the pics are of Brembo OEM’s.

Where did you get the frozen? Sounds interesting.

Craig - I believe I bought them from HMS motorsports - I looked at ours after looking at your pictures and they have fewer cracks after 8 races and a weekend of HPDE with 2 drivers in the same car in different classes. I will definitely get another set.

Craig I think I know a guy that will buy those new rotors off your car.

I believe that I have seen the frozen blank rotors at Tire Rack for around around $80/rotor for the fronts. Thats about twice the cost of Brembo blanks from Bimmer World so it they last four times longer it would be a pretty good idea.
