Brake Pad Opinions

#1

Well, I’m stuck, and frankly a little overwhelmed in choosing a brake pad… For the HPDE’s, I was running F:Hawk Blue and R:PBR Metal Masters, then Mintex C1144’s…

In order of importance, I’m looking for:
[ol][li]Good modulation[/li]
[li]Good pad/rotor wear[/li]
[li]Good initial bite[/li]
[li]Non-corrosive dust[/li][/ol]

The choices I’ve found:
Front:
[ul][li]Carbotech XP10[/li]
[li]Pagid RS-29[/li]
[li]Hawk HT-10[/li]
[li]Porterfield R4[/li]
[/ul]
Rear:
[ul][li]Carbotech XP9[/li]
[li]Hawk HT-10[/li]
[li]Porterfield R4[/li]
[li]Mintex C1144[/li]
[/ul]

I’m not asking for anyone to give up their secrets, just wondering if anyone’s had experience with, or has opinions of these options… Thanks.

I run Hawk HT10’s front, Hawk HPS in the rear. Works well with not corrosive dust like the Hawk blues

Last year I used HP10’s in front & HP8’s in rear. I’d get 3-4 weekends out of the fronts, whereas the rears lasted the entire season. I switched to HP9’s for the rears at Phoenix Int’l a couple of weeks ago to get a bit more rear bias, and was happy with the results. This was also my first weekend out after rebuilding the calipers, which made a world of difference.

I’d be interested to hear if anyone would have a back-to-back comparison of the bite of the HT10’s and R4’s vs the HP10’s. The Carbotech’s have good modulation but could use a bit more bite in my opinion.

I’ve had good experience with the Carbotech XP8s & XP9s. Perhaps if there was lack of bite with the XP10s, maybe the temps weren’t high enough?

I’ve been using the Hawk HT-10’s for a while and find them to be consistent and smooth with plenty of bite. I’ve been thinking about trying the Carbotech’s but haven’t had a good enough reason to stop using the HT-10’s. I guess the fact that the Hawks are cheaper doesn’t hurt either.

I love the Porterfield R4’s. After going through a lot of the other brands, this one was night and day better. Amazing initial bite and torque. The modulation is awesome too. I get about 3-4 days out of a set of front and the rears seem to last about twice that. It doesn’t eat up rotors, but they do generate a ton of heat and the rotors do get tiny cracks from heat checking so I end up replacing rotors way before wear is an issue. I got heat checking from other pads too.

Porterfield also just introduced the R11 which is supposed to have even more torque than the R4! I’m going to pick up a set and try those out probably in Aug.

I used to run the Hawk Blues and HT-10’s but just switched over to Hawk’s newest compound the DTC-60.

Haven’t run them at the track yet but from what I hear they offer the same or slightly better performance when compared to the Blue’s. Also the DTC-60 compound is supposed to have slightly better life and none of the corrosive dust like the blues make.

DTC-60 Part: HB195G.640

Will there be a problem with running HT10’s on the front and the
rear?

That’s the combo I’m running right now, and I’m fairly happy with it (so long as you keep the pads up to temp).

Update: I’ve done 2 DE with the HT10’s front and rear and didn’t have any problems.

HT10’s gave me great results. I hate blues, ruined a set of brand new Enkeis on a rainy weekend.
Trying Mintex in the rear next.
