Brake bleeding problem-help!

#1

I was bleeding brakes tonight using a motive power bleeder and once I pressurized the reservoir, it started leaking around the seals where the reservoir meets the master cylinder. Has anyone had this problem? Can I still bleed using the old fashioned pump the brakes? Part number 2 here:

Yes, you can still bleed the brakes via the pump method.

Make sure the reservoir is fully seated into the seals. if it is, replace the seals.

The seals #2 seem to dry out over the years and leak a bit especially when pressurized. At least replacing them is not a huge deal.

thanks guys, I figured those old seals are the problem. Luckily my local dealer has them in stock. Unluckily, I just wasted a bottle of Motul RBF600 on the job. I’ll probably just pick up some Valvoline synthetic fluid as I’ve heard it’s very similar for cheap.

Those plugs/seals just pop out fairly easily?

Yes. Just rock side-to-side while lifting the fluid reservoir upwards and it should pop off, and the seals are not hard to work out of the bores in the M/C. Don’t be a gorilla as it’s probably possible to snap off the plastic fittings on the bottom of the reservoir.

That’s a good tip for everything plastic/rubber on these cars. I can’t count the number of small stuff I’ve cracked getting impatient.

Be careful with the Valvoline. Their new synthetic stuff is not the same that they had a year or two ago. I’m not sure why they made the change, but the current fluid has a much lower boiling point than the old fluid. I really liked the old fluid so I was bummed!

Prestone has a new “high performance” synthetic brake fluid that you can buy pretty much anywhere. I’ve used it at 2 events now and it seems as good or better than the old Valvoline. Make sure it’s the “high performance”.

  • Regarding the leaky seals… mine leak every time I use a pressure bleeder, but not that much. I’ve never had a problem with the brakes so I think they only leak when you have them under that much pressure and not under normal use. (I guess it’s time for me to replace my seals as well).
