BMW CCA Oktoberfest Club Races at Road Atlanta

#1

In case anyone is interested in coming out to watch or hang out, the Club Racing circus will be racing as part of the 5-day trackfest at Road Atlanta. The event starts this Wednesday 9/30, and the racing will be Friday-Sunday. Total of 3 points and 1 fun races are on the schedule. The Saturday races are 60-minute enduro format.

Kchildre and myself will be helping to run the show, and will be racing as SpecE30 within CCA rules (for me this is the first time; I’ve always been KP-lite before) and we will have a few other SpecE30 racers out there with us:

John/Natalie Black
Eric/Julio Palacio
Scott Gress
Jlevie couldn’t get his new car finished to race, but he’ll be there to instruct and last I heard was hoping to bring his new car to sort out in the instructor run group.

We got enough racers to have 2 race groups, and we are in the slower group (big surprise), specifically group 2.

There is a link to the full 5-day schedule at http://www.bmwccaofest.org/Road-Atlanta.phtml

Come on out and cheer us on (or laugh your butt off, as the case may be)

I will be there and racing as well… I hope…if I make it through the competition school Wednesday and Thursday.

I am certain that my racing debut will afford additional entertainment opportunities for all.

Al, of course, sorry for leaving your name off. I just scanned the racer entry list by class so didn’t see your name…Why don’t you have a car type/class/etc. listed for your entry?

I am not quite sure. I did register as spec E30. I will say that registering for both the school and the race has been challenging. However, I have been granted a rookie license conditional on completing the school and I show that I am confirmed for both the school and the race.

Is there a gate fee or can I just use the standby “But I am VERY good friends with Chuck Taylor!!”?

Actually, they charge you double if you do that! 2X free is still a good deal. Come on out and root, root, root for us to pass the dreaded SpecE36 cars!

#7

You guys have to pass those SpecE36 cars, come on! Sorry I won’t be there.

Run Group 2 is at 3:35 on Saturday.
Come on out to watch.

Good luck to all the new rookie racers.

Can anyone tell me the schedule for Saturday? Run Group 2 is at 3:35… I presume that’s the mediocre crowd. What time is the other group?

I’ll be there to watch how slow you guys are compared to dudes with better checkbook writing skills.

Here is the schedule.

Bring some baby pictures (or baby if she can travel). If you come early enough, you can sample the famous track cookies.

I think that we had 7 SpecE30’s at the event. I had engine problems that didn’t get resolved until minutes before Friday qual and then, my first time on R888’s, struggled to figure out air pressures.

Kelly had radiator problems. Chuck had a crash into someone problems, Jim (Robinson) had classification problems, Rackeu (Al) got a 3rd in his first race weekend, Julio Palacio had his first race weekend and his son Eric is pretty darn fast.

The Blacks were there with some front suspension issues, and other Florida guys Gary and Don also hung out in the paddock.

There was also some guy by the name of Bucket there, but I never met him. He has a darn pretty car tho.

Chuck’s crash happened right in front of me. I was busy heading for the dirt to get around them (at 7), but my perception is that a KP car over-slowed or maybe got a little sideways in 7 and Chuck was so close behind that he didn’t have much chance to avoid.

I had a scary off at the exit of 3 where I bypassed turn 4 by heading thru the heavily rutted grass at speed. I didn’t intentionally bypass 4, I just screwed up turn 3 really good. Only 2 laps later I went off on the front straight at >100mph. I was well pas the exit of turn 12 and looked up at my cage to my watch. The numbers were hard to make out because they were in shadow. Which is when I went in the grass right next to the wall on the front straight. That was scary. But the car stayed straight thank god and I got it back on the track.

We got a 4th race on Sunday…a “fun” race, whatever that means. There was only 6-7 in it. Most of the BMW guys aren’t in this for the “fun” I guess. We gridded randomly. I got randomly put last. I fought my way up to Eric Palacio and got him when he went thru 7 with an IP car. What I didn’t realize is that the IP car (Scott Hughes) had decided that since there were no other IP cars, he was going to have his fun by trying to keep Eric and I close. Or something like that. So he started screwing with us. I didn’t realize he was doing that, but maybe Eric did. I just couldn’t understand why this damn IP car always seemed in my way. I kept yelling GO GO GO DAMN YOU. But he screwed with Eric as much as me, so what the heck.

It was really a fun race weekend. You guys are missing the boat by not doing the BMW CR races. You should start that app process now so you can race with CR at Roebling the week after our December RA race.

SpecE36 really isn’t that “spec” is the real problem. On the other hand, what class in CCA doesn’t have that level of discrepancy?

I went on Saturday to hang out and watch the races. It was fun to see so many professionally built hobby cars… And then see Robinson’s turd sitting right next to them.

Scott, are not congratulations in order?
The sprint race on Sunday…were you the winner?

Good job!

How was Sunday’s sprint race?

I had a blast racing with everyone this past weekend and it was even better to do the enduro with my Dad. I can’t wait till CMP to do the 3 hr enduro. I have to thank Jim for helping us out in the pits. He fueled for almost all the SE30s during the enduro and it was so helpful having him at my window with stopwatch in hand waiting counting the 5 minutes down.

Congrats Scott on the win Sunday! I got to race him in the fun race that afternoon and it was quite hilarious what Scott Hughes was doing in his IP car (Have to post video later), but he messed around with us equally and generally got in everyones way and still made it a fun race. Scott was fast that race as well and after a oops I made going into 10a I was unable to make up the time.

Great fun for the whole weekend and got to meet other SE30 racers like new racer Al and the Blacks from Florida. Wished more people would have come out as it was a good time.
