Blown Rear shock!!??

#1

Uhh oh…I think my drivers side rear shock is shot. I noticed small puddle of oil directly underneath it yesterday. Today I removed the rear wheel to inspect and the shock is covered in oil. I thought these were gas shocks? Shows what I know.

Without unhooking the sway bar and having only one side in the air I could still move the trailing arm up and down rather quickly for 3-4 inches by hand. There seems to be no resistance from the shock. This is kind of odd since I’ve done lots of work to the car in the off season (none of which involved the rear suspension), moved the car around several times in the garage and haven’t seen any leakage until a few days ago. I haven’t touched the car for a couple of weeks. Ideas?

I’m assuming its blown unless you can convince me otherwise. My question is, does anyone have a spare or an extra for this weekend at CMP??

Chuck- Do you keep these in stock? Ill buy one from you at the track if so.

If not Ill steal one from Craig’s car Friday night.

Any help is appreciated!

Sounds like the shock is gone. It will have to be rebuilt. It may be do to the freezing and thawing playing havoc on the seals inside.

I do have an E36 rear shock but I don’t know if it will fit an E30.

I can bring one for you; I won’t be there till probably 5-6pm Friday night

Its scared of your driving too.

Thanks Chuck,

Just let me know how much I owe you. I hope to be at the track by 5:00 or so, so no big deal.

Call RRT, they can rebuild it quickly for fairly cheap.

Brian, If Chuck can’t get one to you, I have a front and rear spare that I will be happy to lend you. These shocks can be rebuilt and you can send me your rebuilt shock if you like.

Thanks for the help guys. You’re a bunch a of good people, I don’t care what IndyJim says!

Chuck is going to bring me a shiny new one on Friday. Ill send this one out to have it rebuilt so we will have another spare floating around the paddock in the future.

See you all this weekend!
