Blown engine pics

It almost looks like the timing was off, making valves meet pistons, but I put the thing at TDC before taking it apart and it looks like everything matches up right. I’m a little confused. It looks like the previous owner may have decked the head; I don’t know how much can be taken off before clearance is an issue.

Anyways, the pictures pretty much speak for themselves. I’m planning to start with a new old engine.

Ouch…looks messy. Good luck getting up and running again. Any idea of when that will be? Have you found an engine yet?

I’ve got 3 leads. I’ll probably get an engine this weekend or early next week and the new parts (gaskets, etc.) should be here soon. I’d like to be back in the game for Rockingham.

Ouch!!
That’s what it looks like. Now I know when I open my other car engine what to look for.
sorry to hear man, I hope you are back soon.
Good luck.
Check Bavarian Recycling or Foster Autoparts for engines.

Man, that sucks. Sorry to see it… If things don’t pan out, I may know someone who has a spare motor.

Who are you going to use to rebuild the head (ATL area)?

That is confusing looking. Did you brake any rods/bearings? It almost looks like that piston blew threw from too much heat - like from a detonation issue. I had friend with a turbo 2002 that had a piston blow just like that from running pump fuel (instead of race fuel) on the way back from the track.

Best of luck puttin’ her back together.

Not planning to rebuild it. Get another old motor and go racing!

Have to disagree with you there. I’ve held a meltdown piston in my hand. THAT is a broken part, hammering around in the cylinder until it made it’s own escape route through the piston. Failed valve? The head is snapped clean off that one, and the stem doesn’t look bent like you usually see when pistons and valves connect. Maybe the valve just failed?
All a moot point at this juncture.

My current hypothesis is that the head had been decked a lot by the PO, making it possible for valves to hit pistons during float. The first weekend at VIR, I never really revved the thing over 6k. This weekend I took it up to the rev limiter much more often (every time).

I really have no way of knowing how much was taken off the head when the PO did the valve job/timing belt. Anyone know if this is even possible? It looks almost exactly like an M10 we had that was a tooth off on the timing gear, causing the valves to hit.

I haven’t disassembled the head yet, but I’m pretty sure the valves in cyl3 are bent as well because the rockers are loose when off cam.

Ouch. That looks ugly.

Did you check with Bret Luter in NC about an engine? He has so many old e30s, he might have one.

All a moot point at this juncture.[/quote]the Bentley lists the dimensions and how much can be removed…I think it is.3mm or something like that…there is a 3 in it LOL!you could measure it to see and I am sure there are some interested folks.

Wow, sorry to see. I was gonna say, i know Bret has a couple up for sale.

Will you be making it out to VIR in April? I ask because i’m signed up to be your student then. :stuck_out_tongue: :woohoo:

For the THSCC event? That was fast, I just singed up a couple days back. Sure you didn’t mix me up with my dad (Mark)? Either way, I’ll definitely be there, we’ll see about the car.
