Battery light?

#1

On my 87, the battery light would occasionally come on. It really wasn’t a concern until I realized that it would also disable the ABS (the fault light comes on - before the light wasn’t connected). This Saturday I replaced the battery with a new one and the light wasn’t lit until a couple of restarts later in the day. After a few minutes of running the light will go away.

What else could it be? The alternator? I never had a dead battery, so I’m scratching my head.

What is the battery voltage when the light comes on, both engine on and engine off? What is the voltage when the light is not on, both engine on and engine off?

The engine off checks above should be key on. Finally, what is the batt voltage at key off?

That is almost certainly the alternator. If the bearings in the alternator are still good (remove the belt and spin the pulley to find out) it can probably be fixed by replacing the voltage regulator and brush assembly. That can even be done with the alternator in the car.

I’ll be at the shop tomorrow night and will check. Thanks Ranger.

I ran some tests on the alternator and didn’t find anything that surprising until I swapped out the worn bushings from a spare alternator I had. After that things appeared good. Voltage is a bit higher now when running, so I think that was the problem. The fucking ABS light still comes on. Piece of shit car!!
