starting se30 behind a large pack of 944s? that’s just evil.

FASTtech #54 Race Report:
With a lot of help from Jeremy and Sean (and I mean A LOT!) we were able to add yet another SE30 to the Great Lakes field. FASTtech #54 hit the track for the first time during Friday practice. It wasn’t without a few small issues here and there (leaking gas tank, camber plates that tried to kill me, etc). But everyone was so helpful with advice (and spare parts, thanks Michael and Gareth). That certainly made the day. The highlight of Friday practice was getting to chase Sean in FASTech #53. Just when I was starting to get confident with the new car, I lost the ability to steer coming out of turn 8. A quick trip through the grass, I got a bit of steering back and aimed for the sand trap outside of turn 9. Luckily I was able to stay off the tire wall. After Gareth, Michael, Sean and I checked over the front suspension we found that under load the front spring hats were binding against the botton of the camber plates (the inner of the three welded studs). We added an additional washer but had to pull a bunch of camber out to prevent the binding (I have a call out to Vorshlag).
Saturday Team FASTtech #53 was in great shape. Sean Louisin got his first pole! He was followed by Simon Hunter in 2nd and Anthony Magagnoli in 3rd. Michael Osborne was in 4th, leaving Cameron Bullard, Kevin Sweeney, myself, Rob Thorton, and Gareth Willams to round out the field. While I felt #54 (and the driver) were a bit off pace, I was happy to be in the show given the marathon build process in the days leading up to this event. Then the rain came…it was more like a micro-burst with straight winds that litterally picked us, and our awnings, up off the ground, flooded Anthony’s car, the track, etc. That forced NASA to postpone the appropriately named Lightning race until Sunday morning.
Sunday morning brought a wet track. It wasn’t raining so the field started on dry tires. It was slippery at the start, but the track started to dry towards the end of our session. I think Anthony was the only one who found the drier line (that and he’s just wicked quick in the wet). Sean had a lurid slide out of 10b into 11 and Anthony captialized. I found myself catching some familiar cars and worked my way up to 5th, battling Osborne for 4th on the last lap. Osborne made his car really wide for the last lap, raced very clean, and provided a great finish to my first race with the new car. The finishing order was Anthony, Sean, Cameron (first podium I believe, way to go!), Michael, myself, Rob, Simon, Gareth, and Kevin who unfortunately found the tire wall inside of T11.
Sunday qualifying had Anthony and Simon 2/10th’s apart, the only ones to crack the 1:44’s on the relatively green track. Sean and Michael were in the high 1:45’s only a tenth apart. Leaving me alone in the 1:46’s with Cameron, Kevin neck and neck and Rob and Gareth rounding out the field. The 2nd race start was much better than the first. I tucked in behind Sean and we made a great get-a-way only to be hosed by some off pace traffic on the inside of T7. That left the door open for Cameron and Rob to rocket by. Then the coolest thing happened…Sean and I got to race wheel to wheel. This is something we’ve been wanting to do for 10 years! I dug deep and managed to get past Sean. But it wasn’t without a fight. We went door to door, wheel to wheel, mirrors almost touching through T7, T8, and T9. While this was going on, Simon had his unfortunate collision with the GTS E30 of Kevin Gibson. Then a 944 spun in T11 leaving Sean to dive to the left and Kevin and a Miata to dive to the right. Kevin ran out of space and clipped the T11 tire wall and rolled over. This brought out a black flag. Thankfully Kevin was OK. NASA officals resumed the race for a 1 lap shootout. Anthony brought home the victory going two for two. Michael got a great 2nd place (way to go!) and Cameron got another podium (yee haa!). I managed to snag 4th from Rob in T7, Sean was in 6th, Gareth 7th followed by Simon and Kevin. Hope I got all this right…
I must say it’s great to be back. The Great Lakes - Spec E30 crew is awesome to hang out and race with. I’m looking forward to the next event.
I’ll post some video on Vimeo as soon as I can find my firewire cable.

Simon,
Race 1 has Race 2 at the beginning. Somehow your video is messed up and overlayed.
FYI
Michael
Lol, thats jacked up, I’ll try to get the right one up tonight. Oh congrats on your 2nd I should have figured that out considering you were on my bumper.
I have an extra air pressure gauge in my tool box. It is exactly the same as mine which is why it probably ended up in my tool box. Let me know if you’re missing a tire pressure gauge. Cameron maybe?

I’m missing one, but I thought I lost it the previous weekend. If no one steps up, I’ll grab it. Mine was a lower-end Longacre, iirc.

I find it more fun not to use the actual track and just jump the curbs…
Was Kevin running video when he flipped?
