Any hope for crunchy 3rd gear?

#1

My junkyard tranny, in it’s 2nd year of track use, is slowly getting worse on the 4-3 downshift. At Road Atl turn 10A, it crunches about 10% of the time even with rev-match heel-toe.

Currently running Redline MTL. Any magic additives or notions&potions that this group can recommend or should I start saving up for another transmission purchase?

Thanks in advance, chuck

eh, if MTL didn’t fix it, I don’t know what else to tell you. You could trying using MT90, which is a bit better for a dedicated track car, but it’s probably not going to solve your problem.

Come on , Chuck…You knew the answer to this question before you asked it. The synchronizers are shot. Buy a new gearbox and install it this winter or just don’t use third gear. Yeah, that’s the ticket…just motor around in forth gear all the time. See ya, Robert (beating the competition with bad advice) Patton

Come on Patton, you guys are creative. I’ve only rebulit one gearbox, but it wasn’t that bad. Replace those synchros and bearings! Good winter project.

Ed, we’ve not rebuilt any gearbowes yet. The task and parts availability seem too difficuit. I’ll bring two goobered-up boxes to you. What’s the charge for rebuild? There is a business opportunity for Michael here… Thanks in advance, Robert (diagnostics:who needs to troubleshoot-we swap parts out) Patton

Robert - Bring one to the next MA event - we’ll give it a try (the one I did was from a Triumph TR6). If I fix it do I get to keep/sell it?

Yep. Right now it is just scrap metal. As you get good at Getrag repair there will be a demand for the service. There is no reason to pay $1600 for a Metric Mechanic rebuild when the junkyard has 'em for $400. Heck, we sometmes buy gearboxes for $400 and get the rest of the car for free. Robert (i’ve got a 48-foot container of parts) Patton

Robert - I may have to eat crow. The BMW restoration bible recommends scrapping any getrag 260/5 when it starts to perform badly, which is the 325i tranny. But if I get it for free, I am willing to break it down and give it a try. I also have a couple of "real" wrench turners I can get involved. The metric mechanic tranny is one nice beast. I purchased one in '87 for my restored '76 2002 tii. It was nice and only $900 back then!

Chuck, for what its worth, the BMW restoration bible suggests that some problems with crunching may be due to bad shifter linkage. Doubt that will fix it but it may be worth a look.

look up Vic Hall’s post that has a link with pics to the "just getting the damn thing open" pictures.

I’d try a few different lubricants including shockproof as a last resort. And shift slowly whenever possible to ease the strain.
