AMP Spec E30/Spec Miata RACE

#1

AMP has a internal series that runs every month, their next race is The Sunday Feb 23rd. It’s a cool track and it’s close for a lot of folks, I thought we might give it a try. It’s a 1 day event, Here’s what the organizer had to say:

“Below you will find the link to registration. Entry fee is $125 for a member and $375 for a guest. We are using the NASA rules for each class. Each registration to the event includes two qualifying sessions and two races with additional member sessions for practice. For the second race we invert the top ten positions from the previous race to set the grid. Snacks and beverages are provided during the awards ceremony following the second race”

I believe the “additional member sessions for practice” will be combined with other non racers.

What do you all say? any other suggestions? My only concern is the price. But if we get a group that can commit, I can talk to the owner and I’m sure he’ll give us a group discount.

ABOUT NOISE: We would all have to buy ($75) or rent ($50)a insert that goes inside the tip of the muffler from Balanced Performance, really easy to install. (2 self-tapping screws)

I’ll call Jason about the silencers.

Wonder if Jeremy would allow “member” status/prices for a group of xxx and we’ll put on a good show. He gets to pitch membership to xxx number of new prospects?

You’ve been voted the go-to guy on this.

Jeremy (AMP owner) responded to me that if we get 20+ racers, he will bring down the price. I really think is worth trying out, since it looks like NASA will not be racing there anytime soon! and all packed into 1 day event!

#4

Any ideas on the price of the event? I noticed that $375 is the current non-member price. That may help some people make the decision. I know a decent drop might help entice more to come.

Sandro, I think he would be lucky if we could get 10, 20 is out of the question.Just not that excited about it at $375.

I’ll let you talk it over with Jeremy.

Hey guys. I am an AMP member and my son and I raced in the last AMP event with the only spec e30 in the group. It was our first time in the car and basically we sucked. The friggin’ Miatas pulled us in every part of the track. We had a supertrap installed on the muffler in an effort to make the sound requirement. (See Gray Dog’s post under exhaust thread).
I had the car dyno’d because I was so depressed. I though that if the car was pulling 150hp I would quit motorsports, sell my track cars, relinquish my club membership, and take up a more sedentary hobby. Thankfully, I think, the car was only pulling 126 hp with the S-trap. It was 145 with the supertrap off. I doubt 145 will keep up with most spec e30’s, but an extra 19 hp I’m sure will make a noticeable difference.
I’m not certain yet if I will be able to make the Feb event, but I’ll definitely be back as soon as I can. Hopefully without the supertrap, a tune-up, and maybe lighter weight motor oil, I can get up close to 150 hp.
I will say that the event was very well-run and the track surface is superb. With only the 10 or so cars out there, there was plenty of racing room - especially for me since everyone left me in the dust and I had the trailing part of the track to myself! Which, of course, sucked.
Personally, I would encourage everyone to come out. I’m happy to help with this in any way I can.

So, I’ve been emailing back and forth with Jeremy and he says the best he can do is $325 for 10 racers and $275 for 20+. He says we would get a lot of track time in one day. Anybody interested?! Thoughts!

Yea, I think the major selling point would be that everyone gets two races and two qualifying sessions (possibly more open track time?) - all in one day. So we’d save on the travel and hotel expenses for sure compared to a 2-day event.
And, still plenty of time to drink a beer at the end.

#9

I would be interested at $325, and a friend of mine who races miatas would probably also be in (we were just discussing how to get some track time at AMP before the November Chumpcar race there)… perhaps we could work with miata racers to get our numbers up to 20, or at least 10??

I may have a work conflict with Feb 23rd, but if this is a regular thing, I could make another date.

Also very interested in hearing about other easy noise solutions that don’t cost 20 hp.

#10

How certain is it that the spec e30 exhaust really needs any additional noise reduction?

#11

We’ve been black flagged w/o baffle every time

From Jeremy Porter (AMP):

Sandro - Just spoke with Jason at Balanced, he seems to think guys are confused. Please tell the forum that it is a WHOLE DAY of track time, not just qualifing and practice and the race. They will get those sessions, PLUS over 3 hours of additional track time. NASA you get 20, 20, 30 minutes. An hour a ten minutes of total track time. You get just in the racing part, 60, 30, 30, and the race of 20, and 20. Then you get at least an additional 3 hours of track time. We provide lunch, and awards at the end. J

#13

What device can make sound without killing hp?

#14

I don’t think the loss of hp really makes a ton of difference at this track, since it’s kind of tight.

#15

Wow, sounds like a lot of track time, enough to split among a couple drivers.
Is it possble to register a car with two drivers and share the seat time (we would share the lunch too)?
