AKG rear subframe bushings and the washer

#1

I am installing AKG 75D poly rear subframe bushings - do I keep using the large washer on top of them? I suspect the answer is no, because the center alum core on the new ones only sticks up as much as the old ones with the washer in place.
thanks,
bruce

Good question - and observation. I installed the same bushings and asked the vendor if I should use the washers and he said “Yes”. He thought the polyurethane still needed the chassis weight to be spread out over the entire surface - which makes perfect sense. I haven’t put the sub-frame back in the car yet, but I did buy a new set washers since mine were in really bad shape. Wondering what to do now…

Well, I guess it’s time to check with the manufacturer and remove the doubt! I’ll give them a call Monday and post the answer here.

I emailed them today as well.

Right or wrong, I put the washer back in when I did mine.

I received a reply from AKG this morning:

[quote]The washer is not necessary, but if you have it, and it’s clean, you can go
ahead and reuse it if you’d like.

Hope this helps.

I looked at it last night and although I’m more comfortable with the washers in place from a load-spreading standpoint, I do not like the reduced engagement of the aluminum center post to the chassis. Since AKG is saying the washers are not needed, I think I’m going to leave them out of mine and see how it goes.
So now we have at least one car with them in and at least one with them out. Not a big test sample, but it will have to do.

Bruce (or anyone else running them), is everything still good with the washer installed? I went to install a new subframe with the AKG bushings today and noticed exactly what you had and decided to wait until I found out if it is good or not. Having only around 2mm of the core sticking up is what got me nervous. And even though AKG says you don’t “need” the washers, I would much rather have them in.

Use the Washer, it will prevent the softer bushing materials from deflecting vertically.

I’ve got the washer in on mine and it has been fine.
