Affixing sunroof panel in place

#1

Hi all,
I am curious to know what and how you guys dealt with sunroof. Question for those of you who removed sunroof mechanism – how did you affix sunroof panel in place and how did you deal with 4-5mm rubber seal that goes around sunroof? (weld the panel, epoxy it, or…?).

Regards,
Igor

Use the force!!!

:woohoo:

Weld some tabs to it from the bottom about an inch in size. On the cars here generally 2 front and rear and 1 on each side. Weld them up high enough so that when you tack the sheet metal in it sits flush with the roof panel. Then just use a factory sunroof seal or calk around it.

Dredging this back up…I know there was a recent thread about how different folks have affixed their sunroof panels but the search function isn’t finding it for me. Does anyone recall which thread it was in? I just removed mine tonight and want to start the process of permanently attaching it.

Mine was shimmed into place (using the sunroof drain tray) flush with the roof and then tack welded it to to the roof in six places. I finished it off with a thick bead of GE Silicone II aluminum sealant. (About one "toothpaste-size" tube will do the job – mask the edges with painters’ tape, just like you would a countertop backsplash.)

Mine is tack welded in about 12 places. The gap is filled with lots-o-caulk. It looks like shit and the tack welds burned the paint inside and out. I fixed outside, but I know inside will haunt me in a couple of years (and they’re harder to deal with because it’s not flush like the outside). I did, however, ditch the cassette mechanism, which was unbelievably heavy and right up at the top of the car in the worst place for weight.
