A New Car -what should I keep 87' or 88'?

#1

Hello all,

As some of you know I have 1988 325is the problem is that it will give you tetanus just by looking at it.

Today with the help of another racer (thanks Sean) I bought another 1987 325is.

Is there anything that I should take off the 88 to put on the 87 that is legal to do so? I will be comparing DMEs, but other than that?

You can see pics of both cars here. http://picasaweb.google.com/dpereda/SpecE30

In my opinion, '88’s are the best year to have. Big bumpers but all the other stuff of the later years. Larger Fuel tank, Later front valance and spoiler, Rear wheel arches, single fuel pump, and some otehr stuff I can’t remember.

That said, rust is always a bad thing. I am not sure you can take the '87 and make a '88 but maybe.

I’m not sure what is legal but I put all 89i parts (everything) on my 86es, well I kept the 2.7eta flattop piston long block in with the 1.3 Motronic and all i parts.

Nice writeup - but not even close to legal. There are only 2 legal engines - an M20B25, and an M42B18. You can’t swap parts from an M20B27 engine into an i engine, no matter what the chassis is.

Perfect I am new to this and am glad to hear I can race my 91 318is M42. Guess I should start thinking about the M42 now. Thanks again for info.

The best cars in my opinion are the ones the run and require the least amount of work.

With that said… I think Michael summed it up best. But I have an 88. You might get some 87 guys tell you differently.

An 87 does have the disadvantage of some unique parts that were only used from 11/86-8/87. With the exception of the front spoiler which is NLA and scarce in the used parts world, the unique parts are available from a dealer. It has been hashed over several times (try a search), but my understanding is that you aren’t allowed to move the later spoiler to the 87. The power train & DME can be swapped.

Ohh man, the 87 front spoilers are hard to find? crap I have to replace mine cause the guy b4 me “upgraded” a 91 front end. He might still have the old one, he has a few BMW parts laying around.

Thanks for the feedback guys

Dan let me know if you need any parts and vice versa, I am down in Cherry hill and we can probably help eachother with stuff. Andrew Z az_renpromo@yahoo.com
