87 325 anyone race in SU

#1

Hi folks. I’m new here. Located in NJ/NY area and have been a track instructor for PDA and NASA, completed my first 2 NASA races last year and now looking to get into a car for racing. I just picked up a bone-stock 87 325, I believe it’s an "e" which would put it in the SU class. I have looked through the standings etc and see the SU class doesn’t have a large number of participants. Is this true? Does anyone race in SU? Before I go through converting this car over I wanted to see if it’s even worth it. Thanks for the help.

Alex May does (did?) run in SU.

David Hicks has a car that could become an SU (but he’s considering swapping the engine for SO).

I think if 3-4 drivers commit to SU, it would begin to grow, it’s just getting over that hump that’s taking a lot of work.

Our first season (2003) we had two SU etas and one SO 325i. With all the etas running around on the street, I thought it would be the larger class.

Seeing that drivers like to go faster, almost all the cars being built are SO cars, with almost all of them being 325i’s.

I’m glad I’m in SO now and will be surprised if more than a few ever build SU eta cars.

Ok with that said…

What does it take to make an SU into an SO car?

You have to swap:[ul][li]engine[/li][li]transmission[/li][li]ECU[/li][li]differential[/li][li]instrument panel[/li][li]exhaust[/li][/ul]
Am I forgetting anything?

Basically, you take everything that was specific to the ‘e’ cars and replace it with the ‘i’ car equivalent.
