85 318 to M20 swap...will not run

#1

Yo guys

I am helping Beavis put an M20 into the 85 318 I gave him (the M42 lasted 2 days!) The car will start on ether, will run on the cold start valve but the injectors are not working. It is my understanding that they are ground signal fired and that the harness for the motor is pretty much self contained. Could there be something missing as the 318 was a jetronic car?

Please help, I want the car out of my garage!!!

Beyond my expertise…good luck though.

Al - are you coming to BRE to dyno?

Al, I don’t have any direct experience, but I did once put an M20 i motor into an 85 325e car that still had the old-style rectangular connector on the fuse box, as opposed the the 1986+ round connector on the firewall (for th ECU). I ended up paying a local tech to take the body and engine harnesses and splice together an adapter. Worked great on my car except we had to tap the harness for the tach.

I’m not using the splice harness (it’s about 12-14 inches long and I just tucked it out of the way) and I can bring it to RA if you want to try it when you get back.

I’ll try to help, but I need some info…
What year is the engine?
Are you using the DME that came out of the same car as the engine?
Have you checked the front & rear engine ground straps?

Got the pigtail done, this is a rectangle to Rectangle so it was not too bad…me thinks it has something to do with a ground…

Fritz

I think I remember seeing cars with a ground from the rear of the valve cover over to the battery tray, is that what you refer to as the rear ground?

I spoke to the previous owner of the engine, although the engine it self is in good shape he said it developed a running problem related to the injectors…he said the problem “drove him crazy” he replaced the injectors, checked the sensors, checked the grounds then gave up…

Looks like we may be switching the harness…I have never had a car do this. It is strange to me that the cold start injector is firing but none of the others. We have traded brains, AFM’s jumpered the relays etc…

Al,

Yes, I beleive there should be a ground from the valve cover to the battery tray (or there-abouts). Wiring diagram also shows a ground from the o2 sensor-to-diagnostic connector lead.

The cold start is run independently, I beleive.

I don’t remember mine having a cold start valve but oh well. After removing and installing my engine I could not get it to run. I traced it to no injectors. My problem ended up being a not so good conection where the harness goes together under the intake. When I used the mounting bracket I just could not seem to get the conector to go together right. It felt right but was not. Remove both ends from the mount and put it together and all was good.
