4dr vs 2 dr?

#1

In reading the rules, it does not appear there is any difference in running a 4dr car vs a 2 dr car. 4 drs are legal, right? Important info I need to know before shopping. :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, if I may suggest: the current rules I downloaded make no mention of the impending elimination of the SU class. I’d recommend this be blatantly posted in huge letters someplace on the main web page. I barely figured this out in time as a perfect 318 donor presented itself this week. I’d hate for other newbies to not find the message board threads regarding this before they buy cars and begin work.

yes, 4D are legal

If it is a 90-91 318, then those fall in SO.
An SU car can be engine swapped to become an SO car.

thanks,

Seems like that would be a very competitive combo - 318 with an M20 - is anyone running such a setup already in SpecE30?

#5

It should not be any more competitive than a regular M20 equipped car. If you swap in an "I" motor you will need to change the diff to the 3.73 etc etc.

and make weight, so the initial weight advantage of the early 318 is gone.

Dwight - 4 doors are definitely legal, and I feel lucky to have one. It allows for packing the car with track stuff and it is easier to work on seats, harnesses, fuel pumps, etc. From what I have seen with the 2 door cars, after you get the cage in, the behind the seat area is really difficult to use.

Makes sense - I was thinking power to weight and slightly(?) shorter wheelbase make for a more tossable ride, but yea if the weight, engine and gear ratio are the same then not much of an advantage I spose.

Ed, exactly what I thought regarding rear access. I thought they were legal, just didn’t see any specific mention in the rules, nor have I come across a photo of anyone racing one.
Is the wheelbase different between the two? If so, I imagine it would affect fitment of a pre-bent roll cage kit.

No wheelbase difference. Four door, Taxi Cab, big bumper e30s are cool. It is just not so cool to be passed by a Taxi cab (although I’ve never passed anyone). Regards, Robert Patton

Dwight - no difference in wheelbase, but the floor pan may be different, which might affect cage placement. My cage is custom.

By the way Dwight, if you are concerned about whether or not the 4 drs can hang with the is cars, check out the video of my son, Michael, at CMP last month. Although he was out driven by some veterans, he had his moments. I must give credit to Ric Bergstom for giving us a nicely engineered car, that we have continued to upgrade.

This is especially true when cleaning the inside of the rear window…unless you have a 7 year-old son with a good roll of paper towels and a can of glass cleaner.

I am very happy with our 4 door and the car is definately capable of running up front! The driver is coming around.
