4 door roll cage

#1

Has anyone installed a cage into a four-door E30 with intentions to run SpecE30? Does the four-door pose any specific problems when preparing for SpecE30?
EDIT: I see from the Gallery that car #21 is a four-door, so I guess only the 2nd part of my question applies.

Thanks in advance,
-Matt

I am car #21

Only issue is a custom sized window net and a smaller entry/exit to the drivers seat. I am pretty skinny, so it really did not matter to me.

Also, if you design the bars efficiently (safety is first, of course), the added bonus is having extra easily accessible storage in the car when you are heading to the track

Alex May #54 has a four door Spec E30.

The nice thing is that you can open the rear doors and throw tires in the back.

The four door has shorter front doors, so it makes getting in/out a little harder. I think the B pillar also tends to get in the way of your vision.

ps. Oops, didn’t see your post Steve. You still want those stock seats? send me email if you do.

Guys, thanks for the quick replies. My track car (deliberately built to SpecE30 stds) is a four-door, and I LOVE being able to throw tires and other junk in the back, even with my half-cage (okay, rollbar). I’m not going to be trailering anytime soon, so that’s why I’d like to stay with this four-door chassis.
Again, thanks.

Car #30 is a 4 door as well.

I like the smaller opening front door. HArder for something to get to me in a tbone.

Stiffer Chassis. (this appears to be unproven, but it does make sense with extra door post and smaller openings)

Visibility sucks, but that is what mirrors are for, so no issues there.

Lots of room to get to fuel pump, camera, belts.

Space to store you fuel cans, jack, spare tires, etc.

Little harder to get out of so I do run the door bar lower…but I feel the smllaer opening makes up for the lower door bar.

Continued thanks to all for the feedback.
Question: are your cage builders having trouble making the cage fit in your four-door cars??

#7

We built the cages in the #325 and #44 salazar coupes. I don’t think a 4-dr would pose any extra difficulty at all. If anything it would be easier to weld the rear plates and the top of the hoops. We have to remove the rear side windows of the coupes to have better access.

BMW motorsport would be racing all 4 doors if the could. The 2 door M3 is purely for marketing purposes. The longer door opening really hurts a 2 door car. Check out the cages in our WC cars for reference.

doubling up on the A-pillar bars (see Bimmerworld cage page) for strength is an interesting idea. Is that allowed by NASA CCR or prohibited due to 15.6.2? It does make the front part safer.

thanks,

Anyone know if the Autopower cages fit the 4-door cars?

Looks like I am reviving a long dead thread here.

Anyone have some good photos of their 4 door cage? I am trying to decide if I should build my current 4 door car or start looking for a 2 door. My cage builder asked if I had some pics of a 4 door e30 with a cage in it.

He seems to think it will actually be easier for him, but he wants to see how the door bars in particular were handled.

Mine is not quite finished. It is easier to install from an accessability standpoint. I don’t see why the door bars would be any different though(?).

I have a pretty sweet cage in mine (ignoring the in process paint job). I’ll try and take some pics of it this weekend.

My personal opinion is there is no reason to go for a 2 door unless you just have to have that look. 4 door is a little harder to get in and out, but that is far outweighed by the increased access to the backseat.

tomzzy, I’ll come check yours out when we are at MidOhio on Friday.

Hey Dave,
This is Saturday. I was at Mid-Ohio yesterday but my car was not. Perennial racer’s story: It’s not quite ready yet. I couldn’t find you at the track, but I was consumed most of day in the Comp License School. Used a track rental car. (I passed - oh yeah!) I did meet & talk to ilateapex (Michael O.) briefly. Looking forward to seeing you (and racing you) in the future.
