3rd brake light

#1

PO removed the 3rd brake light. I figure that it’s time to replace it, but I don’t know how the wiring works because there’s no wiring on my back deck at all.

How does the wiring get to the 3rd brake light?..from trunk or passenger compartment? From driver or passenger side? Wire colors? Thx, -S

On my '87, it comes from the driver’s side interior. Floor up to the rear deck and across to the light. One of the wires continues across for the rear defrost on the passenger side; the rest is a bundle of 4 that looks to disappear into the 3rd light and should have a plug on the end, IIRC. Wire colors are a sort of tan/brown, green with red stripe, and two green with black stripe.

Am I illegal for not having a 3rd brake light? (Not sure if it was removed by the previous owner or if I never had one as mine is a 12/86 build date.)

I’m going to be checking for third brake lights of anyone that finishes ahead of me at CMP… Per the rules it has to be there and has to work. Are you listening Scott?

The third brake light will be right behind the hula dancer.

You’re pretty fast at CMP. My breakthru was somewhere else. I may have nothing to worry about. But I’m going to try real hard .

Seriously tho, I was thinking about putting it in tonight. Making it actually work is going to be harder because the wiring is gone. But to be legal, the bastard just needs to be there, it doesn’t actually have to work .

There are more wires going to the third brake light than are necessary since we don’t use the check panel. If someone else doesn’t come up with which wires operate the light in the next day or so, I’ll figure it out and post what’s needed.

Ok, 3rd brake light is installed and operational.

Splitter/undertray idea #5 is installed now too. Hopefully it will last longer then the 50yds that idea #4 laster.
